RAILWAY PORTER KILLED.
Per Press Association'. AUCKLAND, January 11. A fatal accident occurred at Gien Eden railway station shortly after three o’clock, the victim being the porter in charge of the station, Alexander who fell in front of an inward bound train Irom Swanson as it was entering the station. Both legs were practically severed. MacFarlane died in the hospital at five o’clock. Deceased was married and was thirty-five years old. He leaves three young children. An eye-witness says that deceased went forward towards the incoming train presumably to deliver the tab et, but when about three feet from the engine his foot slipped. He endeavoured to recover his balance and spun round, but overbalanced, falling face downwards against the engine and between the engine and the station platform. The ergine-driver applied the brakes and brought the train to a standstill within a carriage length. The wheels, however, had passed over both legs. Deceased had been in New Zealand for eleven ><ars, being in the railway service all that time. He was secretary of the Glen Eden School Committee and was highly respected in the district.
