MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
CHRISTCHURCH. (Before Mr H. Y. ‘Widdoweon, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. A first offender, aged 6eventy-five, charged with drunkenness, was convicted and discharged. Another first offender was fined 20s, the amount of his bail, in default forty-eight hours* imprisonment. HARD LABOUR. Minnie O’Gonnor, aged forty, was charged with soliciting in St Asaph Street. She had previously been convicted of a similar charge. O'Connor was sentened to one month *b imprisonment with hard la hour. ALLEGED THEFT. Arthur Smith, aged thirty-nine (Mr Tracy), on a charge of theft of a set ot gig harness valued at £6. the pro perty of James Neill, w*as remanded un til Wednesday next. Bail was fixed at £25, with one surety of £26. BICYCLE THEFTS. Frederick Charles Rhodes Clark, aged thirty (Mr Batchelor), appeared on remand charged with the theft of a bicycle valued at £B, the property of John Bridgens For the accused Mr Batcholor'vsaid the offence was committed while he waN under the influence of liquor. He asked for probation. The Magistrate said that he did not see any reason to vary his pratice of many years. Accused would be convicted and ordered to be detained for reformative treatment for a period not exceeding two years. James O’Connell, aged forty nine, also apeared on renjand charged wit-h the theft of a bicycle valued at £4, the property of George Andrew Brown.

Theo East, aged nineteen (Mr Tracy 1 ) appeared on remand eftj a charge of the theft of a watch, chain, medal, compass and Is 2d in money, of a total value of £7 4s Bd. The probation offi - cer’s report was read, and, as a resu t of the officer’s suggestion, accused was admitted to probation for three years. JUVENILE COURT. A YOUNG GIRL’S THEFTS. A girl aged fourteen was charged (1) with the theft of a silk dress anil lunch case valued at £l, the property of Ida Goodwin; (2) a petticoat, valued at 5s 6d, the property of Grace Taylor; and (3) a pair of white shoes, valued of, los, tKe property of Jean SturrockT After a long explanation from the step-father, the Magistrate decided to commit the girl to the Christchurch Receiving Home, to be brought in the Salvation Army form of religion A child, three years old, was com mitted to the Christchurch Receiving Home, to be brought up in the Pres byfcerian form of religion, as hai no visible means of support. A child, aged fourteen, whose father could not control her. was committed to the Christchurch Receiving H'ame. to be brought up in the Cbirrch of England form of religion, a recommendation being made that she be placed in a home such aS St Anne’s or the Salvation Army for training. The Bakers’ and Confectioners Union i annual picnic will be held at Caroline Bay, Timaru. on Saturday next. This is the first picnic excursion arranged from Christchurch to Timaru. The selection of the seaside resort is proving a very wise one. for the demand , for tickets has already been so great that a special meeting of the committee is being h«id this evenimr to consider the advisability of arranging for a .second train. In view of the distance, arrangements have been made for the train to travel at express rates, also for a stop of ten minutes each way at Ashburton to enable passengers to secure refreshments.
