DOMAIN FETE. Mr J. H. Shaw, who has taken a eery keen interest in the Domain and Sports Grounds, has convened a meeting which will bo held in the Council Chambers on Monday evening. His ob ject is to arrange a domain fete early in February. The co operation of all sports bodies in New Brighton is neers sary, as the intention is to improve all playing areas, erect pavilions, etc. A fete in the Domain will be such «sure to be a success. Comparativelv few people know or appreciate the ra tural beauty of the Domain, or realise what a great asset the borough has there. Most casual visitors arc only conversant with the beach. QUEEN CARNIVAL. A most enjoyable evening was spent the residence cT Mr and vey, 89, George Street, in honour of the Central Queen. Music and dancing was continued to a late hour. The lucky number competition was won by Mrs Payne, the prize being a cake. The amount of 80s was realised fo» Miss E. at f i» Lvii.g iorwurd-<J to the committee. PERSONAL. Messrs W. J. M’Kenzio ami V. Wyatt, who have been ill with pneu uionia, are now convalescent. SCOUT ACTIVITIES. The New Brighton Boy Scouts seem to be enjoying themselves at the Hei mitage. The first part of the journey from Timaru to Fairlie was very un lucky, as they had the misfortune to break a wheel of the trek cart, which necessitated obtaining a new on*, sn«. they arrived in Fairlie almost worn out by the long journey. However, aftcu they had had tea aud milk provided by kindly friends Lliou spirits rose who*,, to the joy ot all, Mr Elmes, manager of the Mount Cook Motor Service, kindly suggested that Tie should take them all to thh Hermitage in one oi the firm’s lorries. 'R-us, besides giving them more time for alpining, also cut out the ruttgh tout**, which would un doubtedly have delayed them considerably. Mr I«ong, of the Hermitage here showed his kindness, together with the many guests, to the boys, who, as Mr Bishop says, hare had-ihe time of thenlives. He states th«t when visiting Stocking Glacier Mr Long provided a guide, also special boots the lik of which he had never seen before, his weighing •lb each. They leffr The Hermitage regretfully, arriving at Fairlie on Wed nesday night, and are now on their trek home, the following programme being followed, weather permitting:--Geraldine, January 11; Peel Forest, January 12 to 16; Mayfield, January 17; Staveley, January 18; Methven. January 19 and 20; Rakaia Gorge. January 21; Hororata. January 22; W’est Melton. January 28; and homo on January 2 i. All the boys are well. The Salvation Armv Girl Guards have been in cami> in the New Brighton Domain during the past week, following on the Boy Life Saving Scouts.

During their stav they have been been under the charge of Major J. Dixon and various leaders, with Mias Butcher, who is a certified nurse with several years’ sex-vice at the front in charge of the ambulance division. Girls from Fairlie, Reefton, St Albans, Sydenham and Linwood have all been there and hare enjoyed themselves thoroughly, and were very loth to strike camp and say good-bye to New Brighton until next year, when they hope to return, circumstances permitting. On Wednesday evening, previous to leaving, a Scout concert was held in the Domain, when items were given by everv troop. The Fairlie girls, in addition to their quota of songs, choruses and recitations, gave a display of ambulance work with credit. Miss Muriel Kershaw, of New Brighton, also donated a song by request. The concert was largely attended by local residents, by whom it was greatly enjoyed. Major Dixon thanked the council for the use of the Domain, and everyone who had shown so much kindness to them. Mr Gott, on behalf of the local Scouts, wished them good luck and trusted they had enjoyed their stay. He also read a tetter from Scoutmaster G. W. Bishop, who was then at Mount Cook. After exchanging cheers, the first scout of the Girl Guards wished everyone goodbye. SOUTH BRIGHTON PROGRESS LEAGUE. There was a good attendance of members at the annual meeting of the ■south Brighton Progress League on Tuesday. Councillor F D. Muirson presided. The report and balancediee were ria-d and adopted. Eighteen new members had joined during the yeai. Additional postal facilities and the installation of a telephone bureau were some of the improvements effected, while the Pleasant Point Domain was being gradually popularised as a result of the galas held by the league. L'he balance-sheet showed a very satisfactory financial position. The resignation of Mr L. Hayton, who was removing from the district, wa s received with regret. During the short time Mr Ha,, ton has lived in teouth Brighton he has been a keen and valued worker. It was -decided to call a public meeting to discuss tbe position in regard to tram extension. PHENOMENAL BATHING. The extra hot weather this last week and low prices of Bargrove’s bathing costumes has ca.used a phenomenal amount of bathing.
