AWARD DEFIED.
SEASIDE GROCERS OPEN. In accordance with the general threat made by suburban grocers all the grocers’ shops in north and South New Brighton are open this afternoon in defiance of the award recently made by the Arbitration Court. The shopkeepers banded together and got legal advice, and the result now is that they prefer to recognise the Shops and Offices Act rather than the Arbitration Court. Some weeks ago in its new grooerv award, the Arbitration Court ordered that the statutorv half-holiday should be observed on Saturday- by all shops within a radius of ten miles of the : city. This naturally did not find ' favour with grocers in New Brighton ; and Sumner, but through some oversight they did not make a protest at the Arbitration Court sitting. This afternoon, a New Brighton grocer, discussing the position, said;— “If we can’t keep open on Saturday. |we might as well keep shut alto- [ gether.” _______
