SWIMMING
SUMNER SCHOOL COMPETITIONS. The annual swimming coutests of the Sumner acuocl toon yiaoe on v* eanesday a-u.euua.noc, and much interest was m the events. Tno title, v.mclt was still maxing, caused a somywnat. troublesome drift in vne swimming basin used, but uns did not auect the championship events, which resulted m both eases in good close umoceis. A new feature was the competition lor the Swimming Association's awards. In this some strong swimming was exhibited, aud, m spite of tho tact, that those who qualified had learned and practised almost wlxotly m broken water on tho open beach, it was fully evident that the training bad been very valuable. The ease with which some of them covered tho distance was eloquent testimony to the value of sea bathing and breast sTroke swimming. In the learners’ race, of 50yds, one competitor had learned to swim only the week be.fore, and succeeded only after a prolonged and determined struggle. The results were as follows: — Championship Race, Girls—Roi© de Pass 1, Molly A burn 2, Roma Bailey 3 Championship Race, Boys—Fred Brown© 1, Hob Comerford 2, Lester Wiggins 8. Certificate of Merit, 890yds—Roie de Pass. Roma Bailey. Fred Browne, Hector M'Dowell, Bob Comerford. Proficiency Certificate, 220yds to 830yds— Ronald Boulton and Alfred Lawson (700yda), Harry Barnett (450yds), Reginald Farrel (350yds), Jack Bailey and Jack Thodey (300yd*), Lester Wiggins, Basil P.ve, George Williams, Jack M'Donald and Gerald Goodeuough (220yds). Learners’ Certificate, 50yds—Dorothy Alexander, Molly A burn, Betty Boulton, Gwen Willis, Ruth Collins, Natalie Partridge, Phyllis Fitxhenry, Ethel Buxton, Olga Ferguson, Thelma Wells. Kura Wilkinson, Enid Buxton, Archie M’Aulay. Jack Fenton, Ronald (Slacken, Owen Barnett, Raymond Baecand. Bob Malloch. Georg© Murray. Harry Thomson, Keith Cookson, Alan Thodey, Jack Heelop. Croydon Francis, Fred Glackin. Oeric White, Jim Browne, Gordon Middleton, Joseph Trudgeon, Leslie Malpa*. The course lay between the Clifton sida of the pier and the Volunteer Lifeboat Brigade's dinghy, and was swum over a length of 25vd*. The head master and staff of the Sumner School, assisted by Mr R A. Kerr, supervised the 6vente.
