THE WEATHER

EFFECTS OF NOR.’-WESTER NOT SERIOUS. Speaking to a “Star” reporter this morning, Mr It. E. Alexander, director of the Canterbury Agricultural College, said that ho did not think that the nor’-wester yesterday would undo to any great extent the good effects oi tho rain on Wednesday. The rain was just of the- right sort. It came on steadily; and it was not until after two or three hours that the real heavy rain set in. The rain, therefore, had had a good chance of soaking in well. Mr Alexander said that he had made an inspection of tho fields round the college, and had found that the 'ground was well saturated. Another point was that the nor’-wester did not come until about twenty-four hours after the rain. Out Lincoln way the nor’-wester had not beeen particularly severe, and was not nearly so bad as the one ex perienced about a fortnight ago. Further, a good deal of rain bad fallen last night, though probably they had had more at Lincoln than in some parts of Canterbury. if the country was looking better as a result of the rain. Mr Alexander said : “ You would hardly believe the growth there has been in mangolds and rape. I have heard about mushroom growth. This has been something very like it.”
