Many Kittle has come strJngly into favour for tho Auckland Cup. The fact that rain has fallen is in his favour but even with a track to Lis liking, be has to bo taken on trust for a two mile journey. The Summer Cup, one mil© «nd a quarter, looks a more likely race lor him. •»* / To Kara disappointed bis Auckland Gup admirers by his poor showing at Waipa.

Royal Box looked on the big side when be raced at Waipa and be ie expected to do much better before long.

The three-year-old Suggestion has been galloping attractively at Ellerslic. He was a failure at the spring meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, but it is confidently predicted that he will do l>etter on his present, visit. It is probable that he will be favourite for the Shortlawl Plate, on the first day of the meeting, and in some quarters he is* fancied for the Great Northern Derby.

There has been g/eat anxiety, in various quarters, to discover who is to ride Roseday in the Auckland Cup, but it is highly improbable that A. HWilson will be superseded. Latest reports from Auckland stats that Blue Mountain King is no* going on well in his work and that he is likely to play a prominent, part in the decision of tho Auckland Trotting Cup

The three-year-old pacer Taurekarek® has gone on the right way since he has been in Auckland and ho looks like starting a hot favourite for the Great Northern Trotting Derby.

Vaccination, who opened her winning account in the Trial Plate at Tauma.runui, and later in the same day won again, i 3 a four-year-okl daughter of Archiostown, an imported horse by Sir Archibald.

Acceptances for the Winton Trotting Club’s meeting aro due to-night. The Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting, to be held on Wednesday, will provide excellent sport for Christchurch sportsmen. The fields will not be so large as usual, but this will be an advantage, Conducing to more interesting contests than with the unwieldly number of competitors seen at some of the club’s previous fixtures. J. M’Combe went north on Thursday night with Smqnv Loch and Geranial, who are to race at the Manawatu and Marton meetings. The Cheat was to have been in the team hut as a result of meeting with a slight mishap a few days ago he was left at home.

In referring to Australian riders in England, “Pilot” states that Carslake’s weight has prevented him from getting nearly the same number of mounts as Donoghue or Bullock; but, going upon winning percentage it would be possible to account him a better rider than either. In the winning percentage he was firsts in England in IPI9-20-21, and second last season His best effort was 31.08 in 1919. This year, though only tenth in tho actual number of wins, it is by no means improbable he was again first in percentage of jockeys who rode forty or more winners. When the last mail left England he had ridden forty-five winners, and, with 24.45, was an easy first in percentage. Donoghue’s winning percentage at that time was only 13.G3, and that of Elliott 15.77, while Bullock’s figures were 16.08.

Mr If. F. Nicoil, president of the Ashburton Trotting Club, frequently patronises trotting events in Southland during the Christmas and New Year holidays. D. Warren will take Yerey Light. Paradox and the imported filly Noiseless south to represent the Ashburton sportsman this year. The news from Auckland concerning the New Zealand Derby winner, Black Ronald, will be regretted by sportsmen in oil parts of the Dominion. When lie won at Riccarton, Black Ronald was generally conceded to be capable of improvement and it was believed that ho would give a better performance in the Great Northern Derby. ■ Ballymonu. however, was very backward at Riccarton and he should be a j better horse on New Year’s Day, when it is hoped that Razzle Dazzle and Tarloton will also he on hand to add interest to the classic race. If Black Ronald is not all right, the race will suffer a big slump in public interest, while n doubt is now expressed, also, regarding the prospects of Razzle Dazzle seeing the post. Good progress is being made at Treniham with the new grandstand, and visitors will see a great change in its •appearance next month.. Although it will not be nearly finished, there will f be a largo area of standing room on the uncompleted front of the stricture. It is reported that Zouave is a doubtful starter in the Auckland Cup and that he will be reserved for the Christmas Handicap. He has been galloping well since bo arrived at Eli lerslie. IV. 6. Bagby expected to ride Mus- ; betoon in the Te Awamutu Cup at Waipa on Saturday. but Auckland ; papers report that W. Ryan had the j mount, putting up a- stone overwoight. Alusketoon ran. third, about three • lengths from the winner, and the J extra weight no doubt made that difforMurarhi seems to have run very inconspicuously in the Waipa Cup on Saturday. The only mention of the Taranaki horse that the “ Herald ’’ makes is that he was running last in th.; earlv stages. He was not in the ; first seven at the finish. Te Kara is I another l -or«e who ran without receiv- ! nig any further mention than that he was moving up turning for home. Te Kara was a firm favourite for the race, strong support being also accorded Boomerday, Tinokaha, and Muraahi The starting post on the outside at the mile start at Tauherenikau has recently been shifted seven feet, so as to give the horses on tho outside an equal chance in the race with those that draw a position next the rails. Recently the club purchased about Bfevpii acres of land at the back of the course and later on this will enable the racing track to be altered, and an improvement, made at the five aud six iurlongs starts.

In the New South Wales Legislative Assembly recently, Mr T. D. Mutch drew at lent ion to the heaviness of the deductions from totalisator investments prior to the payment of dividends. He stated that the deductions totalled 14 per cent, but though they are just short- of that, every racegoer will agree with Mr Mutch that totalisator investors are too heavily taxed. In the metropolitan area the Government takes 9 per cent and clubs 3$ per cent and fractions, the latter averaging about 1 per cent per race. That means .€l3 10s out of each £IOO before backers get their shares. The deduction is too great (says “Pilot” in the ‘Referee ”) and that is one reason wI«V machine betting is not in greater favour. I have always been a totalisator advocate, hut the conditions associated with it in New South Wales prevent it really benefiting horse-owners or the public. Mr Mutch suggested the total deductions should not exceed 10 per cent, and that would be sufficient. Even 10 per cent, with fractions as ri further deduction, would be acceptable; but I am afraid it will not come about even though the Chief Secretary has agreed to bring Mr Mutch’s suggestions under the notice of the Treasurer.

In England many clergymen are strongly opposed to the proposed betting and gambling, especially crimes of Bishop Wolldon is one who favours a tax. In the course of a sermon on betting taxation, he said, “ The real question between persons who differed about taxation of betting was whether betting was always and everywhere a sin, or whether it was, like drinking, a habit which whs not immoral unless it was carried to excess. If betting were immoral in itself then the Stare could not justly derive revenue from it, any more than it could derive revenue from the white slave traffic. It was his experience that drink was responsible for far more crimes than betting and gambling, especially crimes of

a violent nature. Don’t let us manu. facturo imaginary sins, but concentrate on the siris we know to be real.”

The entries for the Waiau HRacing Club's meeting on .January 1 are highly satisfactory. Sport appears to be coming back to its own again in this district. as the nominations are a record. 95. beating last vear’s previous record of $&. The fields are evenly distributed except the Maiden District Trot, for which only six entries have been received. The other races average from ten to eighteen nominations. Th** course is in fair order after the recent rain, and preparations are well in hand for the fixture. Should the weather prove propitious, visitors are promised a good day’s sport, and an enjoyable | holiday.

Considerable interest is being taken in the approaching attempt of Logan Chief to break the New Zealand beach mile trotting record established by Happy Voyage at New Brighton last year. Logan Chief’s attempt will bo made on New Brighton beach in conjunction with the New Brighton gala, which is to be held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday next week.

Tho Australiirn-bred square trotter Sty to has created a very favourable impression among the track watchers since bis arrival in Auckland, and one morning recently gave a very pleasing display while working over a mile. He was sired by the American-bred sire All Style, sire of those good trotters, First Fashion and Marion Style, and was recently brought over from Sydney by O. Rokkjer, a successful New South 'Wales reinsmari. AUCKLAND NOTES, (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, December 20.
