ELECTRIC POWER FOR WAIRARAPA.

The Wairarapa Electric Power Board’s hydro-power station energised by the Kourarau Stream on Sir Walter Buchanan’s Tupurupuru station, opened to-day, the current being utilised in the town for the first time tonight. The plant, which cost- £32,000 to instal. generates 12*30 h.p., sufficient for the present wants of the whole district for household, dairying and commercial purposes It will be utilised to the full extent till power is available from Mangahao. when the local plant will be commissioned as a stand-by for peak hours and emergency. The plant commences operations with approximately 1000 conSir Walter Buchanan performed the opening ceremony in the presence of Mv G J. Anderson, Minister of Labour. and hundreds of representatives oi' the farming and commercial community. The plant was installed by H R Climie, who lias expedited the work against adverse weather since the commencement in February. Including reticulation the scheme has cost to date £140,000.
