EMPIRE DEVELOPMENT.
NEED FOR PREFERENTIAL TARIFF. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney “ Sun ’* Cable. (Received December 14, 9.5 a.m.) LONDON. December 13. Mr Bruce, in an interview, deprecated the hasty judgments in Australia concerning the result of the elec tions as revealing the popular British attitude towards preference for Empire development. This issue was not submitted to the people. The Government appealed to the people on the purely local issue of protecting home industries. He knew that there was a growing weight of opinion that Empire development was the best and safest policy to restore the prestige and fin ancial position of the British Empire. This opinion was attracting the attention of all political parties, and would continue to spread. He believed that the party devoting itself to this great cause would win the confidence of the electorate. The question of Britain’s over-population had become the supreme question. The only solution was settlement in the dominions,, which cannot succeed without preferential trade within the Empire either by tariff or ether device.
