“TAKE WARNING.”
MAN’S STRANGE ACTION. DID HE BURN THE SHOPS? P*r P&ass Association. AUCKLAND, December 12. In connection with the fire at Alt. Eden Road, Mr Jolly stated that a few weeks ago, just after the Newmarket School had been burned, a stranger came into his shop and said : ‘‘Take warning, I am connected with the Ku Klux Klan. These four shops are going to be burned down.” Air Jolly treated the matter as the ravings of an irresponsible crank. He now regards the matter more seriously. The block of three shops was owned by the Winston Estate, and was insured for £3OO. Mr Jolly’s buildings were owned by Air W. Stevens, of Kaukapaka.pa. Air Jolly’s stock was insured for £250 in the Queensland Company. Mrs Thompson, confectioner, had her stock covered for £2OO in the Royal Office.
Last night fire destroyed four twostorey wooden shops in Mount Eden Road, occupied by Jolly and Co. (sec-ond-hand dealers and land agents), Vincent (stationer and bookseller), Thompson (confectioner) and Rutherford (bootmaker). Nothing was saved.
