EXCURSION FARES TO THE SEASIDE
On a trilling point of order, insisted on by 7 Mr J. W. Beanland, the Tramway Board was prevented from voting on the question of excursion fares to the seaside, and unless a special meeting can be arranged, the matter will not even be discussed this side of the school holiday's. Mr W. J. Walter's motion 'for a ninepenny return fare within restricted hours deserved a better fate, and it to be hoped that he will make a strong effort to have it voted on. It is significant of the parochialism with which these matters are viewed that two members of the Board immediately 7 advocated excursion fares from both ends. For our part, we can see no objection to such a course, seeing that the residents of Sumner already 7 travel, night and day 7 , for fourpence each way. The important thing is to popularise the services, and as the Board simply will not make these seaside residents pay 7 the cost of their transport, some other means will have to be found to make the lines pay. As they are losing heavily 7 at present, the surprising thing is that the Board will not even discuss alternatives.
