ARE SILK STOCKINGS NECESSARY? Iu discussing tlic question of wages for girls in drapers’ shops at the Donfiliation Council to-day, the question of their dress came iu for some remarks. Mr R. D. Martin, for the union, said that the girls were forced to dress weil m order to keep their positions. Mr B. L. Hammond (secretary of th? New Zea.land Employers’ Association): But not silk stockings, Mr Martin! Mr Martin : Yes, even silk stocking? are a necessary item of dress for them these days. “But."’ said Mr O C Cox. “you forget, Mr Martin, that- girls in drapery establishments are able to obtain their clothes cheaper than office girls and others.” “ That depends on the employer, and it varies.” said Mr Martin. “Oh. no.” said Mr Hammond. “ T think that silk stockings are. necessary only for a. side-line: —the matrimonial agency. They are for attracting males, not for selling lingerie to ladies.’”
