A CHRONICLE OF SOCIAL EVENTS,

Professor and Mrs Fiorance left last night for Wellington. Mrs H. Fitch, Feudal ton, has returned homo from a vist in Nelson. Miss Joy MacGregor leaves to-mor-row for a holiday in the south. Mrs Andrew Cuthbert and her sou will leave to-day fir Gisborne.

Miss M. Austin, who has been spending a holiday in Kaikoura, is expected to return to Christchurch to-day.

Miss Betty Cooke is visiting Wellington. where she is the guest of Mrs J. Curtis.

Mrs L. Wilson, who has been visiting the North Island, returns to Christchurch to day.

Mr and Mrs Lionel Comerford intend spending the holidays camping at Woodend.

Mrs Cecil Perry, who was with Mrs Gladstone Robinson. Oakwood, returned to Cadogan yesterday. Miss Phyllis Edgar-Jones is the guest of her sister, Mrs J. C. Guinness, Te Puni.

Miss Muir. Matron of the Christchurch Hospital, is staying at the Hydro Grand.

Mr and Mrs Guyon Macdonald have returned to Orari after a fortnight’s holiday in Timaru.

Miss May Harrop leaves to-night lor a visit to the North Island. She will visit Mount Egmont and then go to Gisborne, where she will spend Christmas and New Year with Mrs Cutlibert.

Members of the staff of the National Mortgage and Agency Co., Ashburton, made, a presentation on Friday last to Miss I. H. Sumner, and Mr N. L. Milner, in view of their approaching marriage. They were the recipients of an oak hallstand and oak palmstand. Felicitous remarks were made concerning their good qualities. Mr Milner suitably responded.

A concert party arranged by Miss Paula Scherek visited Rannerdal© Home on Sunday evening. Those contributing items were Miss Paula Scherek, Mr Hamilton, Mr Dickson, Miss Nancy Hume, Miss Alma Fletcher, Mi's Ben Saville and Miss Cecily Christian. The matron, who provided supper for the party, thanked them for their delightful entertainment, which had been much appreciated by the patients.

The Merrymakers’ Concert Party, under the direction of Mr F. A. Malir.g, visited the Rannerdale Home on Tuesday last and gave an entertainment. Tho items included songs, dances and recitations, all thoroughly enjoyed. The orchestra, under Miss Dorothy Wicks, greatly added to the enjoyment of the entertainment. The following gave items:—Val Tolputt, Gwen Shier. Alice and Catherine Greenlees. John Poynton, Rita Peterson., Mavis Woodward and Master Dick Woodward.

The Winchmore Hall accommodated a large crowd on Thursday evening, when the residents of the district tendered a farewell social to Mr and Mrs J. O’Grady and family, who have removed to Ashburton. Mr and Mrs O’Grady have lived in the district for about forty years. Mr Hunter Morris, who presided, made reference to the many good qxialities of the guests of the evening. Winchmore had benetitted considerably through the progressive spirit of Mr O’Grady, and the district was sorry to lose such a helpful family. Special mention was made of the interest they had shown in the social life of the district. Other speakers made eulogistic remarks. Mr Morris, cm behalf of the residents, presented Mr and Mrs O’Grady with an easy chair each, Miss O’Grady with a solid silver manicure set and Mr Michael O’Grady with a leather suitcase and set of military hair brushes. Suitable responses were made. The evening was pleasantly spent, a number of vocal items interspersing the dancing. Mr V. Simpson, of Lauristot, was M.C.

A large number ol friends attended an evening recently, in the Alexandra Hall, Scargill. at the invitation of Mr and Mrs G. G. Greig, Te Wharua,” Motunau, the occasion being in honour of the coming of age of their elder daughter, Elsie. The evening was spent in musical items, games and competitions. and novelty dances, including a Cinderella cance and a lucky spot waltz. Songs were contributed by Mrs J. W. Harrison, Miss Leila Greig, and Messrs T. O. Johnson and G. A. Greig, apd a pianoforte selection by Miss Jean Cameron. The competitions were won by Miss Jean Cameron, and Messrs B. A. Coe and L. M’Naughton respectively. Mrs Greig wore a frock of black satin, relieved with white, anil Miss Greig chose a pretty frock of a buttercup shade of shot taffetas; while Miss Leila Greig wore a dainty bouffant frock of tangerine satin. After supper Mr D. J. Doak. on behalf of those present, wished Miss Greig many happy returns of her birthday, and briefly thanked Mr and Mrs Greig for the enjoyable evening that had been spent. Mr Greig suitably responded, thanking Mr Doak and everyone for their kind expressions and good wishes. Dancing was continued, Mrs Lament and Mr L. Fairbairn supplying the music. Mr and Mrs David Ladin, Wellington, arrived from, the north this morning and are guests at tho United Service Hotel.

On Sunday afternoon, Mrs Arthur El worthy gave a small at home at Holme Station, in honour of Mr and Mrs Melville Jameson, who have just returned from England. Others present besides Mr Arthur Elworthy and the Misses Elworthy included Mrs and Miss Elworthy, Mr and Mrs Herbert Elworthy. Mr and Mrs Percy Elworthy, Mr and Mrs F. J. Rolleston, Mr and Mrs Guyon Macdonald, Mr and Mrs H. B. Johnstone, Miss Nancy Thomson, Captain Eric Rhodes and Dr and Mrs Gibson.

Saturday evening was the occasion of a most enjoyable entertainment given to the patients’of the Upper Sanatorium by Mrs Holmes and party. The following artists contributed items which were heartily encored nad appreciated by all: —Musical trio, Misses Carter; songs, Mrs Meredith; relations, Miss Manbire; piano solos, Miss Peverill; songs. Mr Richards; recitations, Mr Ferris; songs, Mias EwartMr Cook played the accompaniments, and cars for tne conveyance of the party were generously lent by 3ir t,. S. Thomas and Mrs M. Farkine. In conclusion the tinging of the National Anthem and thanks to the party brought a most pleasant entertainment to a close.
