MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
CHRISTCHURCH. (Before Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Eleanor Josephine Everett, Richard Sheehan and Timothy Riordan were each finedN 10s, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment, for drunkenness. They all had long lists of previous convictions. THEFT OF CLOTHES. John Leslie Parkinson, aged twentyeight, and Joseph Gray, aged forty, were charged with tho theft of one overcoat, two waistcoats, one pair of trousers and one pair of braces, of a total value of £4. the property of Rupert Mortimer Scott. They pleaded not guilty. Rupert Mortimer Scott said he was boarding at the Metropolitan boarding house. He left his room at about 6.45 p.m. on Saturday night, and when he returned at about ten o’clock the clothes were missing. They were found in the accuseds’ bearoom.
Edwin Fox, a son of the proprietor of the boarding liouse, gave corroborative evidence. J’arkinson said he was paid off his ship at Lyttelton on Saturday. He remembered booking up at the boarding house, but after that he recollected nothing. He had been at sea since 1918, and had served in the Navy. Grey, said he was paid off the same ship as Parkinson. They bought six bottles of beer ana four pies. After they had editen the pies and drunk the beer they went straight to bed. The next thing he remembered was the police sergeant waking him up. They were each convicted and sentenced to fourteen days ’imprisonment. CIVIL CASES. Judgment was given for the plaintiffs by default in tho following undefended civil cases:— William C. Collins v. Thomas Taylor, £4O 16s Id; Royds Motors, Ltd., v. J. Dodd, £2 4s; Frederick Willie Freeman v. W. Davev, £3 7s 6d; Grierson and Davis v. T. V. O. Tuohy, £lll 14s 9d; John Patton Elliott v. James Charles worth, £6 10s 6d ; F. H. Southgate v. A. Johns, £2; J. Irvine v. D. M’Laren, £4 2s Gd; H. Pannell and Co. v. S. J. Beaven, £4 Is 6d ; International Harvester Co., Ltd., v. T. R. B. Robson, £34 8s 4d. TENEMENT CASES. George Evans was ordered to give up possession of a tenement to William Leycock on or befoio January 7. Judgment was given for plaintiff for the amount paj,n into court, £1 15s. W. Johnston was ordered to give up possession of a tenement to A. E. W. Stevens on or before January 7.
KAIAPOI. (Before Mr Wyvern Wilson, S.M.) BY-LAWS. On charges of cycling at night without lights Edward Charles Dobson, William Pearce, Walter Famtham and Andrew Johnston were each fined 10s. On a similar charge, Mona Logan was convicted and ordered to pay costs, 7s. For cycling on the footpath, Cecil Manhire was fined ss. SPEEDING. On charges of riding motor-cycles at excessive speeds within the borough Ernest Richard Marsh, and Richard John Hoare wero each fined 40s. For driving a motor-car at an excessive speed, David Storcr lverr was fined 40s. FAILING TO REGISTER A FACTORY. T. S. Fisher, charged with failing to register a factory in accordance with the Factories Act, was fined 40s. BOND TO KEEP THE PEACE Ernest O’Brien applied for sureties for the peace against James Brown. The Magistrate made an order that Brown should, within forty-eight hours, enter into recognisance for a sum of £SOO that he keep the peace for a terra of twelve months. INDECENT EXPOSURE. Albert Edward William Brown, on a charge of indecent exposure in a public place, elected to be dealt with summarily, and was convicted and sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment. MAINTENANCE ORDER. Henry Robert T*> Uki (Mr Maloney) who admitted paternity of an illegitimate child, was ordered to pay 10s a main CASEg Judgment was given for plaintiff by default in the following cases:—Commissioner of Taxes v. Monte Jones, £4O 16s 4d; O. Williams v. Roger Kett, £1 15= 6d. In the ease of K. Finchey v. C. Tainui, £5 6s 6d. an order was made foi payment within seven days, in default seven days’ imprisonment.
