THE BASIC WAGE.
APPLICATION FOR INCREASE. Ftr. paxsa Association. WELLINGTON, December 6. The contention that wages are too low in view of existing high rents was raised at the Arbitration Court before his Honor Mr Justice Frazer (president), Mr W. Scott (employers’ representative) and Mr Hiram Hunter (workers’ representative). An application was made by Mr A Parlane (secretary to the Drivers Union, and a member of the executive of the New Zealand Alliance of Labour) on behalf of the Alliance of Labour that the Court should fix a day to hear argument in favour of a substantial increase in basic rates of wages before the expiration of the 1921-22 legislation, which provided for periodical general adjustments of wages. The reason for the application, said Mr Parlane, was that the present basic rate was not sufficient- to provide for the bare necessaries of physical exist-
After a lengthy speech by Mr Faria ne the Court said the points raised would be carefully considered.
