The contention that wages are too low in view of existing high rents was raised at the Arbitration Court before his Honor Mr Justice Frazer (president), Mr W. Scott (employers’ representative) and Mr Hiram Hunter (workers’ representative). An application was made by Mr A Parlane (secretary to the Drivers Union, and a member of the executive of the New Zealand Alliance of Labour) on behalf of the Alliance of Labour that the Court should fix a day to hear argument in favour of a substantial increase in basic rates of wages before the expiration of the 1921-22 legislation, which provided for periodical general adjustments of wages.
