SCUFFLE IN SQUARE.

TWO MEN ARRESTED. A POCKET-PICKING CHARGE A scuffle in Cathedral Square about 11 a.m. to-dav ended in two young men being arrested and marched off to the Central Police Station in charge of two plain-clothes detectives and two constables. They will be charged in the Magistrate’s Court to-morrow with atte m p ted pocket-pick iu g. It is stated that, when a. Christchurch resident was stepping on to a tram car for the Show Grounds or the racecourse he felt a hand slip into his hip pocket, in which he had placed a ten shilling note. He grasped the wrist and held on to it. In the confusion. it is another man stepped up and begged that his mate should be let off. He then said hurriedly: “ Took behind you.” and darted across the Square into the right-of-way close to the Strand ’fheatre, leading into Hereford Street. '1 hero lie tripped and fell. Detectives Bickerdike and Kearton and Constables M’Lennau and Curnev, all of whom were stationed in the Square at the time, took a hand in the affair. The man who had tried to get away was caught in the right-of-way, and both were arrested. Inspector Cassells stated this morning that this is the first complaint ot alleged pocket-picking he has received during this week’s holiday.
