Nominations for tins South Canterbury Jockey dub’s meeting will close a o'clock to-night. Mr H. H. Fraser wilj l>c in attendance at the ! Canterbury Jockey ( bib’s office until ' noon to-day. j Cameos, dam of the Trotting Cup candidate Onyx, lias foaled a colt to Nelson Bingen, and will 1 be mated this sea sou with Author Dillon. The success of Black Ronald in the i Derby yesterday was very popular with the Riccarton crowd. The hearty cheering which greeted him on his return to the birdcage was partly intended lor the colt and his owner, hut it was also a tribute to J. Olsen, whom many people recalled had only recently resumed race riding after a long absence from the saddle on account of a serious accident. Solf«sx+no claimed ( three winners at Hiecivflon yesterday—Warhue. Geranial and Mantua. North Island stables claimed four winners on the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, while three races went to Riccarton trainers and the concluding event to Otago. The Sotith Canterbury owner. Mr J. V. Murphy, has secured stables rrt Wash dyke, where his horses will bo trained bv J. Malone, formerly of Gisborne. Carette was left at the post in the "Randolph Handicap yesterday. She came down the straight some distance behind the field and taking charge of her rider, galloped round the course. Spotlight and Listening Point •fell after going nearly half a mile in the Randolph Handicap yesterday. C. I.a ns down, the rider of Listening • Point, received a severe shaking. r Ihe Wairarapa sportsman. Mr C. K. Elgar, who won the New Zealand Derby with Black Ronald yesterday, invested a lot of money in the purchase of well-bred yearlings during the last few years, without much return so far ; m fact, up till yesterday his colours had not been associated with an important winner. The public was not. slow to show its appreciation of a plucky owner, who had battled on against moderate fortune. Black Ronald was bred in Australia and was purchased at a yearling for 975 guineas. His sire. Magpie, a high-class winner England and Au.-fcralia. is bv Dark Ronald from Popinjay, bv St Frnsquin from l.helandry. by Goldfinch from Illnmir.ata. "Magpie is therefore close] v related to Rezonian. a well known New Zealand sire, and to Traquair. a great success in his brief stud career in Australia, during which lie sired Woorak, who is carrving on the line. Maltee. the rlam of* Black Ronald, is hy Malster from I/ost Ivoch. by Locliiel. There is a great combination of slaving and sprinting blood in the Derby winner’s pedigree, stnd as he has not been overtaxed, he may be. expected to make a lot of improvement during the next few months. An enterprising English -breeder has sent the brood mare Soft Nose to Australa to be mated with The Welkin. She arrived at Melbourne last month. Unfortunately The Welkin’s list is full lor this season, so another sire will | have to be chosen. The mare is by Bridge of Allan (son of Ivove Wisely) j front Dum Diim. by Carbine from ' Charm, by St Simon, and therefore is a half sister to imported Teppo (dam or Thrice. Deneb, Volpi. Elkin. Three, Trey, and Isa"), all of whom have won races. '1 he fart that, the seven horses were got by The Welkin no doubt influenced the owner cf Soft Nose to

• he Polymnian has been an unlucky performer in classic events this season. He was second to Wild Hind in the Dunedin Guineas lu.st month and he boat all his opponents except Black Ronald in the New Zealand Derby yesterday.

RICCARTON RACES. Perfect weather again favoured the Canterbury Jockey Club for the .second day of the Metropolitan meeting. There was a good attendance, though the crowd was considerably smaller than on Saturday. The totaii sat or investments were £51,183 30s, compared with £54.413 10s on the corresponding day last year. As was the case on the opening day, the racing was full of interest, though some of the finishes did not provide throughout Saturday's programme, j 'J’he Derby contest was a good one up | to the distance, from which point . Black Ronald was always travelling J like a winner, but there was a vorv 1 keen contest between tho next three. The Metropolitan Handicap was also a good race until the. straigiit was : reached, but over the last furlong ] there was never any doubt as to who I would win. 1 .. six arce ptor.s lined up for the Middleton Hurdle Handicap, a race confined to hacks. Hold Star was just a little better hacked than Blue Socks, these two carrying more than half the total investments. Bon Spec was in front from the start, but he never got away from his opponents and he dropped back after going six furlongs, , leaving Blue Socks and i,ord Ashlea in I charge Hold Star joined in at the six 1 furlong post, and a little further oil Lord Ash lea was done with. Gold Star had a slight advantage at the last j hurdle, but it was only on sufferance, ! ILS once on the flat Blue Socks went on to win easily by two lengths. Bon Spec was a. dozen lengths away, with Lord Ashlca a similar distance further back. Likelihood fell at the first j hurdle, and Lochringa at the second, j I he performance of the winner was attractive. as he never looked like being beaten after he took charge a mile from home. He rapped the. last hurdle, j whore he seemed to intefere with Gold j >tar, but the result was not affected. ; Bon -Spec did not jump so wildly as ! usual but, on the other hand, he was soon beaten. Lord Ashleß went well for about a mile, but then faded out. Later on, in moderate company, he will pay his way. A field of twelve lined up for the Criterion Handicap. Sunny Loch had a light call in the betting over Gold Light, while Boadicea was easily third . choice. Boadicea. Many Kittle and Lovesign showed the way for a furlong when Lovesign shot out. She was three lengths clear of a bunch on reaching the straight and still looked a certain winner at the distance. Then Boadicea and Martain Miss went after j her, and Lovesigu’s rider became un- | easy. Ho was riding hard over a hundred yards from the post, and the other | two got through on the rails, Martian Miss winning by a head, while Lovej sign beat Boadicea by a long neck. Then came Printemps, Kilbird and Rational, all three finishing on well, as they were at the tail of the field after going two furlongs. Gold Light was alongside Rational when the winning post was reached and her performance was a good one, as she met some trouble turning for home. Many Kittle went well for half a mile and then collapsed. He is a long way below his best yet. Sunny Loch ran a bad race, never being near the front at any stage. Martian Miss is a sister to Vagabond, by Martian from Gipsy Girl, by Gipsy Grand from Marion, whose dam. Peeress, was a very famous mare in her day. Unlike her brother, who shone over a distance, Martian Miss is seen at her best over seven furlongs or a mile. Lovesign has been rather unlucky in important races at Riccarton, as she was also second in the last Great Raster Handicap. Boadicea ran a solid race, confirming the view that a journey no longer than a mile is her best. Jubilant was withdrawn from the irwell Handicap, leaving a field of nine. Tana dees was a hot favourite, carrying nearly twice as much as Lava, who in turn carried more than twice as much as any of the others. Kiki, after causing some trouble at tho start, whipped round and was left. La. Rev© and Apache were smartest to begin, and at the end of two furlongs La Reve was about half a length in front, with Lake Uru. Tanadees and Lava close up. La Reve was bowling along in front at the distance and a great battle saw La. Reve last long enough to heat Lava by a head. Lake Uru was a neck

away, n neck in front of Apache, with J the others in ;v Imnch, except- Miss (.MiHe, who tailed off. Lava was a trifle uni tick v, as she met trouble twice i on the jemrnev, but lot which she would , have won. Tanadees had every chance j if ha had Iron good enough but he faded out.at the end. The winner was | the outsider of the field. She is a well bred filly, by Kilbroney from Somni- j form, by Boniform from the Australian-.! bred mare Dreamer, a member of the Nightmare family. which produced Commotion, Mentor and Wakeful in Australia, in addition to Noctuiform. ; Nightfall, Midnight Sun, Bon Reve, J Bon Ton, Eligible and hosts of other good New Zealand winners. Lava, who i was second to La. Rove, comes from j the same line, her dam. Formless, } being by Multiform (sire of Boniform) j from Dreamer. The New Zealand Derby was the j principal event on the programme, j Razzle Dazzle and Gay Juiiet Were j withdrawn, probably being reserved | for the Oaks on the third *dav. In a j field of seven, Ballymena bad a slight j call over Wild Hind when the totalisa- i tor closed, while at a. Jong interval j Murihaupo was a little better backed j than Black Ronald, with The Polym- i nian also claiming plenty or admirers, j Wild Hind and Murihaupo showed out at the start, but Murihaupo was steadied and at the end of two fur- ! longs Kalakaua had headed Wild : Hind, who was also passed by Ballymena a furlong further on. Continu- • ing bis run. Ballymena was in charge | of the field at the mile post, followed 1 by Kalakaua, Black Ronald and Wild ' Hind in that order. Kalakaua was ! beaten five furlongs from borne, and i racing round the turn Black Ronald and Wild Hind moved up close behind the leader. When fairly in the straight Black Ronald ranged alongside Ballymena while Wild Hind was j in trouble. Black Ronald had Bally- j mena’s measure at the distance, and from t-bat ooint the result was beyond ; all doubt, so far as first position was i concerned. Thou Murihaupo throw 1 out a. challenge and just when there ' was a good finish in prospect for j second place between him and Bally- j mena, The Polymnian. came with a late run. Several names were being pro- | claimed over the last- hundred and fifty j yards, but Black Ronald strode along in front, winning comfortably by a good length. The Polymnian gradually overhauled the stable mates, beating Mauriliau|>o by a neck, with Ballymena another neck away. About two lengths further back came Wild Hind, followed at intervals by Mountain Crag and Kalakaua. Though Black Ronald was only fourth favourite, his success was very popular, the horse and his rider coming in for a hearty ovation. Jt is a very rare event for J a horse to score his maiden victory in a Derby, but Black Ronald had never won a race prior to yesterday’s classic success. . He ran ’twice last season without earning any money and out of four previous starts this season, he was three times second—in a nine furlang hack race at Mas ter ton, the seven furlong Trial Stakes at Treniliam last month, and the mile Spring Plate at Riccarton on Saturday. His other start this season was in a seven furlong hack handicap at Trentham, in. which he -was unplaced. He was not regarded as a serious factor in the Derby until Saturday, when his good finish behind Soliform, at the end of a mile, showed him up as a colt who could stay. It was his stamina which enabled him to win yesterday. He is a well grown colt, who looks as if he could be improved yet, and more good races over a distance should come bis way later in the season. He claims an engagement in the Great Northern Derby, and he should be a better colt by New Year’s Day. The Polymnian was well back in the early stages of the journey, but be finished well. He might have given the winner more trouble if he had been sharpened up with a good race on Saturday. Murihaupo saw the journey out well, after being carefully nursed for a final run. Ballymena failed when required to go ! on at the finish. It is obvious he did not show bis real form, as stamina is his strongest asset, judged on his Australian running. Since he returned . from Sydney, however, be lias done ; very little work, owing to an unfortunate accident on the Wellington wharf and the break in his preparation doubtless cost him the race. Wild Hind rail patchily, and after being well placed at the turn into the straight, she failed to stay. Mountain Crag and Kalakaua proved muph below top standard, i A field of ten took part in tlie Hag I icy Handicap, but with the exception of Red Wink and Warhue they represented moderate hack form.'. Red Wink j was a strong favourite, with Miss i Mickey just cutting Warhue out of j second position. Viewpoint began | and this pair showed the way along the oack to Warhue and Kiibrin. with Miss ! Mickey next. Ou reaching the straight ! Balasor drew out. but Warhue cut her • ! down and wen decisively. Red Wink '• came from a long vcv to get third, with Miss M.-ii key and Viewpoint next. Warhue's perforiva .i. e was full of merit, and he finish’d ou so well that

I mrther successes mr.v be expected thi season from Warstep's eon. Balasot ■ uey will soon be a winner. Red* Win, , emphasised the idea that ho is a goot \™ck. Viewpoint once more failed t. | realise the expectations formed of bin i a shorter course. g 3 . | - The Metropolitan Handicap attracted ; a held or twelve, including eight norses. ho had run i n the Now Zoa.H2u. Cup. while of the others Sunart, j Enthusiasm and Bonetter had not prej < iousl\ started at the meeting. In a ciose battle tor favouritism Roseday . nad a slight call over Enthusiasm, after | 'V hom ’ at «■ fair gap, came Deucalion, | knnart. Pillicwinkie and Dame Strait- ! iacP - Jt was a good race for over a I Q ,l °st setting a solid pace, j while Scotch Mixture, Roseday, Dame j Strait!ace and Pillicwinkie were all j handy. Racing round the home turn j Deucalion, Zouave, Sunart and BonetI ter also became prominent'. On reaching the straight Pillicwinkie and Sunart were in charge and . below the distanco Sunart and Zouave set after them, with Muraalii and Enthusiasm j mot ing up further back* Then Rose- ! day. Quest ami Dame Straitlace : dropped out. A furlong from home Pillicwinkie was out clear and though ; Bonetter finished well, she could not j catch the Riccarton gelding, who won decisively by two lengths. Sunart, who tailed over tho last bit, was two j lengths further back. Then came S Zouave, just in front of Muraahi, who j finished well, with Deucalion and En- ■ thusiasm close up. Roseday finished i the rear, his performance being a j one. while Phithusiasrn, who was expected to improve on her earlier , form this season, was another great disappointment. Dame Straitlace failed i to repeat her. Cup effort but Deucalion I ran up to the form he showed in that ; race. Bonetter put up a fine performance, but she had no chance with Pili liewinkie. who won in impressive style. | After seeing him come out with* so ; brilliant a. run about three furlongs from home, in fact, it was hard to ! understand why he was not seen much | earlier in the New Zealand Cup. Jt looks now’ as if he should have played | a much more prominent part in the j Cup contest. The eighteen competitors for the Randolph Handicap included some speedy hacks. Refrigeration was a little- better backed than Geranial. who nad a slight call over Fcrino and Uleanorg. There was a bit of trouble at the start and Carette was left. Quite a number of colours showed up early, but Uleaborg’s were very prominent while others that could be distinguished as they raced for the course proper included Hall Mark, Sprinkler. Tnteg*.J rity and Refrigeration. On reaching ■ the distance Uleaborg stopped sudden [y and then" Integrity dropped out. Sprinkler looked a winner a hundred , yards from home, but Geranial wore ' nim down and won by a neck. Rerrigeration was a length away. Swallowflight, finishing with a lato run, was close up, with Brown Willie and Hall Mark next. The winner is a four-year-old gelding by Solferino from Carmania Dv San Francisco from Campania, whosj | progeny also included Miss Delaval ! (winner of the Oaks) and Master De j iaval (Auckland Cup). Geranial has disappointed his connections more than once, but he lias come on a lot lately and now looks a very useful sort, j Sprinkler, the runner-up, is a brother j to Pilliewinkie, and though a long way rrom being a good one yet, be is likelv Ito improve. Swallowflight gave further | evidence of usefulness. Ferino was never seen on the journey. ’ The concluding event, the Epsom High Weight Handicap, attracted a ; field of nine. Prince Ferouz was a ■ j little better backed than Cleasanta ; j with Economist and Mantua also in ; strong favour. The race provided ' plenty of interest. As usual. Picka- ' ninny tried to win all the way, bat she ' collapsed on reaching the straight, where Red Ivriss also faded out. Man : 7ua was then left showing out from Cleasanta, Prince Ferouz and Econo ’ mist. At the distance Mantua was well clear, but her rider iook no chances. ‘ : riding her out to win by a couple of lengths. There was a great- battle for ! second. Cleasanta staying on a little detfcer than Prince Ferouz. after whom t came Some Kid. Whipping Bov and Economist. The winner is not a big | one, but she is a game little thing, who nas done a great amount of racing | | She is carrying more condition than ’ j usual, having only recently gone into I work, aaid she looks like having a- good ' | season at southern meetings. Cle-i-----i santa ran a good race, but she has not . ! quite lived up to the promise she gave ias a three-year-old. Prince Ferouz . | gave another of his consistent perform ; \ anees. Economist found the journey a p i xrifle far. but he should soda be a win 1 ! mr ‘

' ! AUCKLAND RACES. C SECOND DAY. (Special to the " Star.”) 1 AUCKLAND. November 5. Th-e concluding day of the Auckland

Racing spring meeting provided excellent racing. The opening event, the Nor man by Mate, was won nicely by Reremoa-na .rom ten others. Pelham was a good "a vourite, hut Pebble It., Doleful Ditty and Reremoana also received food backing. Attractive was first to -bow out, but was soon joined by Reremoana. This pair made the running till turning for home. Reremoana then took charge, Pelham running up to second. The latter threw out a strong challenge at the distance, but could not reach Reremoana. Bright Light and Marble Glass, who finished third and fourth, put in good finishing runs. Of eleven runners for the Manuka Hurdles Handicap. Hvginas was installed favourite. King Abbey, Pentagram and Miss Melva also meeting with fair support. Tinokaha was the earlv pilot, close!v attended bv Daddy's Girl, King Abbey and Miss Melva. Along the back ‘stretch King Abbey took charge, but turning lor home he was joined by Miss Melva. while Royal Fame and Hvginas also became prominent. From the distance Miss Melva drew out to win comfortably. Tinokaha was a good third and Hvginas fourth. The Epsom Handicap attracted sixteen sprinters, Halgina being the popular fancy, while Finelli, Sir Burnett and Veil were well supported. Irapuka and Finelli were first away, but when the field settled down Finelli led from Ora’s Delight, Pavo, King Quin and Prince Abbey. Finelli was first into the straight, but Pavo soon siipplanted her. At the distance Halgina came along with a strong challenge, but Pavo prevailed in a stirring finish. Alfort, with a late run, got third, with Prince Abbey fourth. The King Edward Memorial Handicap provided a good contest. Of eighteen stawters Te Kara was best supported, with good backing for Mark Time and Surveyor. When the field settled down Loyal Irish was in command, closely attended by Matinee, Lucius, Broad wood and Pompey. Turning into the back stretch Ma’tinee ran into the lead. /There was little change in the postions till rounding the bottom turn, where the field was bunched. Matinee was first into the straight, but failed to run on. Loyal Irish took charge at the distance and stalling off a challenge by Te Kara, won nicely. Mark Time finished well and got third, with Surveyor fourth. There were ten starters for the Onehuuga Steeplechase. Snake was made favourite, with Pittsworth, Silverton and Mary Bruce also well supported. Pittsworth fell at the first fence, bringing down Brown Heath. Silent Dick was an early leader, but after a. few furlongs Silverton took charge and was never afterwards troubled, winning comfortably from Sea. De’il, who defeated Luperino by a head, after a desperate race for second honours. Mary Bruce was a fair fourth. Long Rein fell at the second last fence. For the Musket Stakes there was a field of nine. Nigger Minstrel was a firmt favourite, plenty of backing also being accorded Gaillard, and Lady Rewa. Day Guard began first, followed by Gaillard. but the latter soon lost his position. With two furlongs covered Troilus took charge and led into the straight from Day Guard, the last-named headed Troilus in the straight and won comfortably from Gaillard, who finished fast. Lady Rewa was a fair third and Nigger Minstrel fourth. The Hobson Handicap attracted a big field of twenty-eight. Sentinella. King Cheops. "White Cbmet and Jolly Gay were the popular fancies. White Comet, with Fonnemara as his nearest attendant, led from the barrier until well into the straight. where Just Quietly came along with a wellsustained run and won by nearly two lengths from "White Comet. Connemara was close up third. Taketake and King Pellecule next. There were twenty-one runners for the Liverpool Welter Handicap, the final event of the day.- Musketoon was a firm favourite, over £IOOO better backed than Cool Stimulants. Of the others Arch Laddie and Bute Sound met with most support. Ruapapa soon i got to the front and was never after- ; wards Headed, but only got home by a 1 head from Sunny Jim. who made a big effort over the concluding furlong. Royal Abbey also finished fast and was j a head away third. Musketoon, who 1 was nearly last, three furlongs from home, finished fast and got fourth, just in front of Bute Sound.
