They were intended for ini dividual work, hot as class books. Be--1 fore their introduction it was necessary to train the children hy to use the boqks. 'This, of course, re- < quired considerable work on the part ! of the teacher in making suitable api pa rat us. First, the children are shown i how to match words, and word vistialj isation follows. Phonetics are .intro- j j duced at a later stage. By the - use | of pictures and cues, children are en- ! •ibled to teach themselves. Aliss Bastev ! illustrated her address by showing ; 1 various apparatus which she herself ! | hail made. A discussion followed, and j the action of the Department in -the i 1 selection of authorised books was com- ! , raented on. It was resolved that a i j letter l>e sent to the Director of Edu- j : cation, pointing out that the very re- ! stricted list of approved books gazetted j was quite incompatible with the mod- j ero educational ideals. Teachers, as well as children, must have freedom of ] development. At present supplementary j readers, adequate-and suitable, are not I being supplied free, as suggested, and | the teaching of reading is considerably j hampered thereby. The committee’s I report on the suggested arithmetic syllabus was introduced by Miss Agnes j Menziec. Miss Chaplin referred to j some phases of the arithmetic syllabus j for the upper standards, but lack of j rime prevented the matter being fully dealt with A vote of thanks was ac- j corded to those who had helped in the j , evening’s programme.
