England, however, was due to the late King Edward VII., who, when Prince of Wales, voyaged to India on the Serapis in 1878. At Alexandria, where a call was made, the Prince, an invevterate cigar smoker, became acquainted with the cigarette which he at. first regarded as a novelty. Many of his fellow passengers, seeing His Highness smoking these, till then, little known contrivances, commenced to do likewise, and soon a liking for them .was cultivated-
