BE PAROCHIAL.
* BROTHERHOOD OF MAN. “ Parochialism ” was touched upon by Mr 0. T. J. Alpers, the newlv-elected president of the Christchurch Citizens’ and Ratepayers’ Association, in the course of an address at the annual meeting of the association last evening. “ 1 deprecate the fear of being parochial,” he said. ‘‘ Don’t be afraid to be parochial. A man should, first and foremost, love his city, and ii bis heart is big enough he might love his country and his Empire. But stop short at that, or your heart will burst. Why talk of the humbug about the brotherhood of man ? It stops short at the 1 nigger,’ and perhaps the Chinaman, although it might be that the latter is a. very good fellow indeed. Love your city, your country, and your Empire, and then you shall not be guilty of trying to follow heartbreaking platitudes, even although they are fathered by such great men as Abraham Lincoln. Most of the great and good things which have come to mankind have been the product of parochialism.”
