-Mrs Bernard Wood leaves for 'Wellington to-night. Mrs W . Williams (Collins Street) left fox- the south this morning. Miss Freda Jennings leaves for the north to-night to take up a position xn Wellington. Mrs I>. W. AX’Garrison. Sydney, i a visiting Christchurch, and is a guest at Warner’s Hotel. Mrs B. A. Wvn-Yorke (Glenmark) the guest of her mother, Mrs H. W. Jennings, Gloucester Street West. Mrs It. M. Porter, who has been visiting friends in Wellington, is expected back at the end of the week.

The friends of Miss Hettie Smithwill hear with regret of her unexpected death, at her residence in Dur ham Street, on Sunday evening. Miss Smith was art mistress at the Girls’ High School for a number of years, and was popular with both, old and present pupils. An enjoyable' evening was given b\ Mr and Mrs J- Kent, of Antigua Street, on Saturday evening, to celebrate the seventeenth anniversary oi their wedding. Music. songs and cards formed the evening’s entertain ment. after which a delightful supper was served. During the evening the health of the host and hostess wa.s drunk with musical honours. Princess Ileana. the youngest daughter of the King and Queen of Rumania, who is thirteen, lias been staying for some time at New Quay, Cornwall. She has had a very enjoyable holiday, going in for surf bathing and swimming, and has visited numerous places in the district, among them Land’s End, the Lizard. Truro, St Ives, and Pentire Headland. From Newquay she went on to stay with Sir Richard and Lady Muriel Paget at Cranmore Hall, Shepton Mallet. Here she attended a fair for the parish church, presented colours to the Boy Scouts, and als<s“ attended a dance.

Miss Belle Cable lias left for an extended holiday in England. Mr and Mrs .T. Yeats. Wellington, arrived this morning from the north and are staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Miss Mac Ewan (Wellington), Colonel and Miss Brittain (Wellington) and Mr and Miss Cox (Wellington) are among the guests at Warner s Hotel. Mrs Henry Cotterill and Miss Betty Cotterill are expected to arrive in New Zealand during the week, after having ! spent an extended holiday in England, j On Wednesday a bridge ev-ening will j be held at the" Canterbury Women’s j Club. Members and friends will ar- j range their own tables.

Mr and Mrs IT. F. Wigram are due to arrive in Auckland on Thursday by the Remuera. and are expected in Christchurch on Sunday morning. The ball which Lord and Lady Strathmore gave at Glamis Castle for their tenants and workpeople to meet the Duke and Duchess of York was a great success, over 500 guests being present. Dancing took place in a marquee in front of the castle with a special floor, and when the Duke and Duchess entered with Lord and Lady Strathmore they walked through between lines of guests to the other end. The Duchess of York wore a gown of pink satin embroidered in crystal, with nenrls and a diamond tiara, and Lady Strathmore was in velvet and 'lace, with ornaments of diamonds and beautiful pearls. The Dowager Lady Air•ie, always a striking figure, wore black lace over gold, with a tartan -scarf, and she had diamonds in her white hair. Her daughter-in-law. Lady Airlie, was in pink, and so was Lady Rose Leveson-Gower. Miss Betty and .Miss Alice Cavendish-Bentinck were also of the party and the men in■•l uded Loid Airlie and the Hon Michael and the jfou David BowesLvon.
