COUNTRY NEWS.

(Special to the “ Star.”) WAIKUKU. The Waikuku Mutual Improvement Society met on Thursday. Mr Ifcay Morriss was in the chair. A questionbox was held and all questions were satisfactorily answered. A social will be. held next week and on the following Thursday Miss Marjorie Sloane will bo convener, with Mr Douglas Collie as vice-convener. The members of the Waikuku Ladies’ Miniature Rifle Club intend to hold a. wind-up evening in the Waikuku Hall. It will take the form of a flannel dance. The music for the evening will bo supplied by IJunnibel's Band. Mrs J. Morriss is spending a few weeks with her niece, Mrs Smith, of Addington.

SWAN NANO A. On Friday evening the Swannanoa Hall was the scene of much, gaiety, the occasion v bcing a kitchen evening given by the residents of Swapnanoa in honour of Miss Emily Petrie, whose marriage to Mr J. K. Morrell, of Horrelville, is shortly to be celebrated. There was a large gathering of friends' from all parts of the district to the number of ' about one hundred, visitors from Ohoka, West Eyreton, Horrelville, Evreton and Fernsidc being among these present. Those present were kept fully occupied till the small hours of the morning with songs, games and dances. The new game of balloon tennis was introduced and was very popular. Mrs A. W. Searle acted as mistress of ceremonies most efficiently and music was provided by the guests. After supper the presents were opened by the guests of honour, to an accompaniment of much laughter and applause. ,At the conclusion cf this ceremony Mr Horrell made an excellent speech of thanks. The evening was fully enjoyed by everybody, both old and young. Pleasure was added to a most enjoyable evening hy an invitation from Mr and Mrs James Petrie for all those present to become their guests there early next week at a social evening after the wedding had been celebrated.

OHOKA. On Friday last the Methodist Church Sunday School picnic was held in the Ohoka Domain, where about seventy parents and children were present. What with cricket for the boys and rounders for the girls all were kept fully occupied between the races, in which all the children participated. Luncheon, which was much appreciated by the children, was served in the hall. The day being fine the scholars enjoyed themselves thoroughly.

KAIAPOT. As the result of a collection made by the Kaiapoi branch of the Plunket Society on Friday last the branch will benefit to the extent of £23. / LOBURN. At the progressive euchre evening for prizes presented by Air P. Hill, Sumner, the winning ladies were Mrs Hills, Mrs Wilkins and Aliss Sara Hodgson (each twelve games), and in cutting for the prize Mrs hills was successful. For the men’s prize Mr P. J. Pulley, with fifteen games, was the winner. Consolation a.wards went to Miss Ferguson and Air Ferguson. Tor prizes presented by Air A. E. Cook the winning lady was Miss Elbe Brady with thirteen games, and Air F. Bailey with 'fifteen games vas the winner of the men’s prize. Airs Hills, Alisa Henrv and Aliss Dawson, each six games, tied for the consolation award and in cutting Aliss Henry secured the award. Alessrs G. Bennett, G. Chambers and R. J. Dimmocks, each five games, tied for the men’s consolation. The final of the third tournament of the season was also decided, the winners for prizes presented conjointly hy the school committee and the tennis club being Aliss Adelaide Kennedy with fifty-two games and Air F. Bailey with sixty-three games. At a meeting of the school committee there verb present:—Alessrs J. Brady (chairman), J. Brown, A. E. Cook, G. T. Croft and T. Dawson. It was decided to hold the annual school concert in November, and also to inquire into the matter of extending the playground. The annual meeting of the Loburn Sports Club,! which holds its annual fixture on Boxing Day is being held on the last Monday of the present month in the Coronation Hall. RAKAIA. At the monthly meeting of the South Rakaia Road Board there were present : Alessrs A. J. Alagson (chairman), J. Lambie, H Crothers, T. Blackley and H, A. Harrison. All P. T. Dolan wrote applying to have two sheep bridges erected over two water races on the Dobbin’s Ford road. It was decided to notify Air Dolan to apply to the Ashburton County Council for the bridges. An account from Alessrs Hampton Bros, for shingle supplied to the board from their pic was passed for payment. The clerk was instructed to obtain particulars from Air W. Harrison of the trees which, he wished to purchase. Alessrs A. J. Alagson and T. Blackley were appointed to sign cheques. The following transfers were notified :—John Ellis Boyce and Samuel Boyce to Samuel Boyce ; George Edward Smith and Lewis Smith, executors in the estate of the. late Joseph Smith, to Lewis Smith and Edward Clifford Smith; R. E. Limbrick to Richard Rolleston ; Caroline Haslett to Horace Barlow. It was decided io call for tenders for the removal of about 400 trees in the gravel reserve in the back track -at Bart Hill.

Arrangements in connection with the annual tea-meeting and concert of St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Rakaia, are well in hand. At the concert the Rev G. ATiller. of Ashburton, will givo an address, while a concert party from Ashburton under Airs Chapman and Air Craighead will provide the programme. ' OMIHV. The two days’ rain this week proved very welcome, as the countryside was in need of moisture. The crops have already benefited by the thorough soaking they have just had. The Sports Club arc holding their sports to-day, Dominion Day. in Mrs Al’Laughlan’s. paddock, where the trains will stop. A good day’s sport

is anticipated, as the events are many and the entries good. SEAFIELD. On Tuesday last a trophy presented by Mr W. J. Aloore, of Ashburton, was shot for by the lady members of the Seafield Miniature'>Rifle Club. The following tied the scores being: Airs Hurst 27. Airs Gregory 27, Mrs Baynes 26, Aliss Gregory 16. Aliss F. Gregory 15. Aliss I. Bruce 32. Aliss C. Bruce 14. Miss Parkin 25. After three shoots off. Miss Ida Bruce won with Mrs Gregory second. Miss Bruce’s other scores were 27 and 26. All scores given being off the rifle. HANMER SPRINGS. A social was held’in the halL by the Anglican Church on Wednesday when there was a good attendance and an enjoyable evening was spent, ('anon Smith, in opening the proceedings, explained that the funds so gathered were to be donated to a bazaar to be held at a later date in order to deal with further improvements required for the church. Musical items were contributed by Airs D. M’lnnes and Air W. D. Watson Mrs Ashton, Alisses Lahmert and Fawcett undertook the arrangements for the evening. Messrs Willis and Fredrickson acted as M.C.’s for the dances and the music was supplied by Airs G. G. Webb and Air W. D. Watson. The winners of the various competitions for prizes donated byMr Dodds were:—Alusical arms, Airs J. Paterson and Air Gikigan, Air and Mrs Gemmell; “lucky spot" dance, Airs Ashton and Air Fredricksen. DORIE. The final shoot for the season of the Dorie Miniature Rifle Club was fired on Wednesday night for a trophy donated by tylr H. Aiuckle. The following tied with scores of 35:—C. Curry 33-2, J. Baxter 31-9, R. Harrison 32-6, E. Kingsbury 30-8. On the fifth shoot E. Kingsbury won. R. Harrison being second. Good shooting was done by C. Curry’ whose scores for the four shoots were 34, 34, 34, 33. / TEAfI’KA. The annual meeting of the Temuka Caledonian Society was held in the Fire Brigade Room on Thursday evening. Air T j. J. Grant presided. The secretary (Air W. F. Evans) read the annual report and balance-sheet. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the president said that the credit balance from the sports was not so largo as had been expected. However, considering the counter-at-tractions on that day. the society had done very well. Air AY. F. ,Evans tendered his resignation as secretary of the society, after holding the office for sixteen years-. Mr Shields said he very much regretted that the society was losing the services of Air Evans, who was an ideal official, and his position would be hard to fill. He had tried, without success, to persuade Air Evans to reconsider his decision, and he thought that it would be futile to ask him to stand aeain. as his mind
