AN OLD FOSSIL.
BY SINBAD. A rumour has come from Taihape of curious things in the ground, and now an industrious chappie has started exploring around. It seems that a great Dieynodon is found there in fossilised state ; of course, it may be a Mastodon, a beast of quite different date. The Maoris lend aid to the theory, with legends of seasons gone by, when monsters most fearsome and eery were everydays thing to the eye. It’s certain that bones have been sighted, submerged in the bed of a creek ; and I at the news was excited, and further reports did I seek ; so, seeing a bar was quite handy, and 1 had the requisite kale, I sought out my friend, Mr Shandy, and to him I carried the tale. “ The rumour i don’t find surprising,” he said as he swallowed his spot; “in fact, 1 would venture surmising, the rumour is more true than not. You see. I’ve first-hand information I know the locality well, and hotter than hottest damnation, I've found, is the whisky they sell. On towns half so lively and snappy, I ne’er in my lifetime did call ; when you’ve spent a week in Taihape, vou’ll see any daru thing at all.”
