CUSTOMS BOOM.
LARGE REVENUE INCREASE. BIG MOTOR-CAR IMPORTS, Per Press Associations TV ELLINGTOX, October 15. There are indications of another boom period, from the statistics of six month’s revenue which have been made available by the Minister of Customs. The revenue figures show a big increase in the main articles of import, with a remarkable growth in the volume of motor cars coming into the Dominion. The Customs revenue for the first half of the current financial year totalled £3,373,461, compared with £2,559,588 for the corresponding period last year, an increase of £813,873. The total number of motor vehicles imported during the last six months was 7523, while the total for the boom year (1920) was 11,924, or considerably less than double the present half year’s import. In 1922 the number had fallen to 1719. The revenue estimated by the Prime Minister from Customs for the current financial year is £7,000.000. As the best of the year is still to come it is anticipated that the Customs revenue will exceed the estimate, and may approach the total of £8.408,726 received in the boom year 1920-21.
