Mrs John Holdgate (Timaru), who has been spending: a few days with Mrs T). B. Haiti day, Onslow Street, returned home yesterday morning. Miss D. Al’Lean "Muir, of Wellington, nas a passenger by last evening's express from Dunedin. She is staying at the Clarendon.

Mr W. A. Midlane, of Midlane Bros. (N.Z.), Ltd., accompanied bv his wife and family, is leaving for London at the end of the year, where he will reside for the next few years.

On Saturday an enjoyable evening was spent at Mr and Mrs J'. Milligan’s residence, Ensor’s Road, the occasion being the sixtieth birthday of Mr Milli gan. Community singing, dancing, games and musical items were indulged in until midnight, and the singing of “J or He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” brought the evening to a close.

An interesting and enjoyable evening was spent at the residence of Air E. C. Woodford. 62, Francis Avenue, St Albans, on Wednesday last, the occasion for celebrating being the first anniversary of the birthday of Alaste* Leicester Woodford. Games and competitions occupied the attention of a merry baud of children during the earlier hours, and these were followed by an interesting programme of musical and elocutionarv items. Music was supplied by Airs E. C. Woodford. Miss Graham, Master Maurice Archer and Aliss Vera Harrison (pianoforte) and Air A. R. Woodford (banjo). A playette by Afisses Ada and. Elsie Butcher and Afessrs A. R. a,rul E. C. Woodford brought a successful party to a close.

On 1 hursd&y evening, what proved to be o ne of the most enjoyable concerts given in the St Alark’s Schoolroom, Opawa, was rendered by a party of Christchurch artists in aid of the organ repair fund. The programme wa/=, opened with orchestral selections bv

a trio including Aliss A. Warren (piano), Air Berryman (’cello) and Air Thompson (violin). Songs were rendered by Aliss Nappcr. Alessrs C. Williamson, Thompson and L. Campbell An entrancing item was Miss A. Audi hert’s graceful and clever solo dancing Afessrs H. Instone and R. Turner ren dered a number of humorous sketches and monologues. Instrumental solos were played by Messrs T. Amos (flute) and Berryman (’cello), and were deservedly encored. The accompaniments were played bv Aliss A. Warren. After the concert the performers partook of supper, which was provided by the ladies of St Mark’s, and the vicar (Rev TT. AVilliams) took the opportunitv of thanking alt who had so generously contributed to such an excellent programme.

On Friday afternoon at the residence of Airs Smith, Gresford Street, St Albans. a farewell tea was tendered to Airs C. J. Bennington, who is shortly leaving for England. Airs Bennington was the recipient of a presentation contributed by irhose present*. A photograph of the group was taken on the lawn, spring flowers and shrubs making a pretty background. A special fen ture of the evening was an exhibition fox trot given by Mr C. J. Taylor and Miss Catmng, from the Premier School of Dancing. At a late hour cars conveyed all visitors to the city.

On Thursday evening the Leydon Street Hall was the scene of an enjoyable social gathering, the occasion being the annual social of the Sta* Stores, Ltd. Airs N. K. Cox returned to Timaru front Christchurch yesterday. Airs F. F. A. Ulrich. Timaru, came to Christchurch yesterday. On the occasion of her birthday Miss Ivy Mundy recently entertained a number of her girl friends at afternoon tea at Ballantyne’s. Airs Raine. who was with Airs Charles Le Cren. Timaru, left on Thursdav for Ashburton to stay with Airs Roberts. She will return to Alartinborough next week. Owing to illness amongst the members there was no formal “break-up,” that being postponed for a possibly later date. The competition for the trophy presented by Airs O'Connor, resulted in a tie for Aliss Sonntag and Aliss AI. Allen, the latter winning in the shootoff. The fortnightly trophy presented this week by Alisses C. Andrews and Allen, was won by Airs F. Truscott. Before the close. Miss Foster in a very neat complimentary speech, presented the gold brooch to Aliss AI. Allen, who had won it- the most times during the season. The recipient, in acknowledging the trophy, thanked the two coaches, Messrs Foster and Sandford. for the excellent work they had done during the season. A very enjoyable time was spent on Saturday evening last at the home of Mr and Airs A. M’Donald, 12, Ashmole Street, Radley, when a number of friends met to celebrate the coming of age of Air Percy Thompson. Alusic and games caused the time to pass pleasantly and rapidly. H. Harper. The birthday* cake, illuminated with its twenty-one candles, was cut by the guest of honour. Mr Harper proposed the toast of the guest, which was received with musical honours and responded to by Air P. Thompson. Air D. Bishop, on behalf of the assembled guests, thanked the host and hostess for their kindly hospitality and referred in eulogistic terms to the friendly' - spirit that prompted the evening’s entertainment. The annual plain anrl fancy dress dance of the AVasliington Lodge, No. 28, 1.0.0. F., was held in the Sydenham Football Hall on Tuesday. About eighty couples danced to the music of Air Reg Moods’s orchestra. Extras were played by Aliss Hansen and Air A. Orr. Alessrs F. Pitt. E. Piper and A. Clare were Al.C.’s. The judges for the costumes were Alcsdames A. Campbell, A. Clare and Air A. E. Campbell. The prizes for the. costumes were awarded as follow:—Ladies Airs J. M. Ollivier, who recently retired from the position of honorary' secretary and treasurer to the cottage. The presentation was made by' Mrs Croasdaile Bowen, who said:—“On behalf of the subscribers to the Children’s Convalescent Cottage I wish to express to you our thanks for your whole-hearted devotion to the work of the cottage during the past fifteen years. Xo one could have given herself with more zeal and energy to the cause, or worked with more inspiring enthusiasm, and the results of your efforts will always remain as a tribute to your devotion to your work. On behalf of the subscribers I am asking you to accept this chair and cushion, as a mark of their appreciation of your valued work.” Aliss Ollivier, in thanking the donors expressed her deep appreciation of the suitable gift, and wished the cottage all future success. Aliss V. AI. Prosser, of Sydney', came down from Wellington last night Dame Adelaide Anderson arrived from the north this morning. Aliss J. Alj Turnbull, who returned yesterday from Hanmer, goes on today to her home in Timaru, Air and Airs C, B, Norwood were amongst this morning’s arrivals from Wellington* Air and Airs C. H. Cocker are returning to New Plymouth to-night after a brief stay in town. At the conclusion of the evening’s entertainment thanks were expressed to Airs Ilolmes and her party for the enjoyment they* had provided the boys, and cheers were given for the visitors. An enjoyable kitchen evening was held in the Aladras Street Schoolroom on Tuesday* in honour of Aliss Florence Till's approaching marriage. The bride-elect was the recipient of many useful presents.
