RELIEF AT KAIAPOI.

Cash, bedding, or provisions are being solicited for sufferers from the floods in the Kaiapoi district, and it is pleasing to reoord a prompt response both in North Canterbury and Christchurch. The Mayor’s list in Christchurch lias been headed by substantial donations from two gentlemen who seem to be a never-failing source of assistance for any worthv public object, and it is regrettable that many other moneyed men do not follow their example. However, we think that the response to the appeal for relief funds will be generous, and will be participated in by all classes of the community. The appeal is special and urgent, as befits the nature of what might be called the calamity of the Kaiapoi floods. Great suffering and inconvenience have been borne by old and young alike in face of the floods, and the position is accentuated by the fact that the winter is yet to come, bringing one of those depressingperiods in which “ the clouds return after the rain.” The relief fund will not be sufficient to restore everything that has been lost in the floods or to compensate for the inconvenience suffered by the residents who have been driven from their homes, but it will help them to put. a more cheerful face on their misfortunes, for they can hardly fail to be heartened bv the knowledge that a wide cirele of their fellow citizens are in practical sympathy with them.
