THE BOW OF THE WINGATUI WAS SO HIGH OUT OF THE WATER WHEN SHE ENCOUNTERED THE SOUTHERLY GALE OFF AKAROA THAT SHE WAS NEARLY BLOWN ASHORE, AND HAD DIFFICULTY IN RETURNING TO PORT. THE PHOTOGRAPH SHOWS THAT SHE WAS ONLY DRAWING NINE FEET OF WATER AT THE BOW.
