DRAINING KAIAPOI.
PEOPLE GETTING BACK TO HOMES. The flood position is slightly improved at Kaiapoi. The waters are still receding, and a further number of people have been able to reach their homes to find out the extent of their losses. The houses are still uninhabitable. A hole has been cut in the bank or j the Cam in Sidey Quay, in oflder to ! release the water between Ranfurly 1 ►Street and the Cam River. Permission has also been obtained from the ' Rangiora County Council to cut a j groin on the Camside Road near J Purdie’s property, to hasten the drain- j age oi the Cam area. The Mayor of Kaiapoi. Mr H. M’ln- j tosh, and a. number of councillors this morning completed a tour of inspection where conditions rendered it possible. The Mayor has received a load of firewood and a quantity of potatoes from Mr James Wright, which are much appreciated. The local coal merchants are short of coal, and Messrs M’Clatehie and Red path, of Christchurch, have kindly diverted a quantity of coal from other ! places to relieve the position.
