DAMAGE ON CHEVIOT LINE

TWO HUNDRED YARDS OF SUP. BRIDGES DAMAGED BY FLOOD. Flood waters have caused grave damage In the vicinity of Cheviot on the Waipara-Farnassus branch line in North Canterbury. There have been serious slips at several points, and bridges over the Hurunui and Waiau are reported to be in a precarious state. “ Conditions on the Cheviot branch are very bad,” said a Railway Department official this morning. “ The bridge over the Waiau at Parnassus! is impassable, but the extent of the damage is not yet fully known. Severe slips and wash-outs havei also taken place. The worst slip is at a point twenty-four miles north of Waipara. The fall of earth is approximately 200 yards in length, covering the rails to a depth of seven feet. There is also a slip twelve miles from Waipara, and another forty-two miles from Waipara.” Another railway report despatched from Waipara at 10 a.m. said: — “ Heavy rain overnight, and still raining.” This makes the situation blacker than ever. It is quite impossible to say when the line can be repaired, or when gangs of workmen can start clearing the slips.
