NEW TABLE SETS.

Although the charms of snowy damask are difficult to rival, it is impossible to overlook the advantages whicu arise from the use of sets of table mats which enable the housewife to achieve all sorts of novel effects in her luncheon and dinner-table schemes. One woman j the other day ordered a table set to be made in readiness for the time when | some flowers that she wanted to use for table decorations would be in bloom in her garden. HAND PATNTED DECOR A LTON. A novelty is seen in some painted silk dinner-table mats which have arrived j in this country from the Continent. They are circular in shape, and ar? decorated with liand-painted designs, generally of roses, outlined with pen painting in black and gilt. A' set ui these, with the roses in soft pink and red and a large round centre mat to match, is an ideal accompaniment to a bowl of pink and red roses. Another charming design that could be use 1 with practically any flower has a border of small purple grapes with their leaves edged with gold. The effect of gilt-edged painting is very rich, yet ’t D said that the sets wash perfectly. IRISH TV ORK.M AN SHIP. The Irish linen industry have made great strides in recent years by intro ducing all sorts of new notions and designs, and some of the loveliest luncheon sets. both, as regards colour and workmanship, hail from Ireland. Can ary and gold are the most popular shades in these exquisitely fin© linen sets embroidered w r ith white, and a salesman at a- large store recent?"* told the writer that- they found it impossible to get sets in these two colours made quickly enough. Some of these mats are very attractive in canary linen decorated with lines of hemstitching forming squares, similar mats being obtainable in lemon, rose, pale blue and azure. Tan linen also looks smart and original, also Wonderful shade known by the name of burnt orange. MATS AND RUNNERS. Very charming American crochet designs are now obtainable for trimming luncheon sets consisting of mat© ami table runners of from Ft. to 60 inches long, according to the length of the table. The mats are large enough t.> hold the silver, glass and plate, and the centre runner measures the same width across ns the mats, it does away with the need of a mat at each end of the table, so that a runner and four mats are enough to serve lew si c people. The crochet should, of course, j be very fine, and having a square mesh : gives much the same effect as filet lace. A delightful design shows a basket- of j flowers, while another original luncheon I set has a round centre and mats edge I I with crochet butterflies.
