The celebrated Spanish matador, Mendez, was gored and dreadfully injured in the first bull of the season at Bordeaux. Mendez iought three bulls. He placed a pair of banderillos in the first, when it charged him and knocked him down on his back. He was not scri on sly hurt, and proceeded to dispatch the first bull and then the second amid great enthusiasm, the crowd admiring his almost reckless daring. Then he faced the third, regarding which he had previously expressed fear. The bull charged forthwith and tossed Mendez, wTio just managed to clamber lo safety and then fainted. He was gashed in the abdomen and partially disembowelled- Internal hsemorrhage set m from a severed artery, and an operation was immediately performed n. hospital. Mendez refusing an an- i aesthetic. His condition is critical.
