ALONG THE BEACH.
HEAVY SEAS AT BRIGHTON At New Brighton during tho weekend there was a very heavy sea runrag. and big rollers backed by a strong south-easterly wind swept the beach with considerable force. Just after eight o’clock yesterday morning, when thr tide was full tile display of breakers a\ as at its height. it was in the vicinity of the pier that the force of the sea. appeared greatest, but the structure was not damaged beyond the loss of a 30ft brace across the piles at the seaward end. Underneath the pier there was a considerable scouring away of sand, amounting to as much as three or four feet in places. The seas swept right under the piles which support the tea rooms, washing away a quantity of Si: nd. On the south side of the pier, where the foundations of the wall have been laid, the tide swept right across and three times yesterday morning the washed past the band rotunda (at the tiam stop) to the channelling on the roadway. It is only on rare occasions that the sea has reached this point, even with high tides. The concrete foundations of the wall had a good effect as a breakwater. On the other side of the pier (towards the Surf Club’s pavilion) there was considerable scour, but the wall v-as a great protection. This morning at full tide the sea, though still heavy, bad moderated as compared with yesterday owing to the absence of the strong wind. A number of borough workmen were engaged in cleaning up, the work consisting mainly of levelling out where the scour had taken place. There was no damage either at New Brighton or the North Bench. The big tide caused the Avon to overflow its banks in places for a short time. About eleven acres of low-1 ving iand along Richmond Terrace was inundated to a depth of between two and three feet. It. was used for grazing purposes, but there was no loss of stock.
