THE WAIMAKARIRI GORGE BRIDGE NEAR SHEFFIELD. WAS BUILT WELL OVER FIFTY YEARS AGO, BUT IT IS A VERY SUBSTANTIAL BRIDGE. CARRYING RAILWAY AND ROAD TRAFFIC. THE DECKING IS NEARLY A HUNDRED FEET ABOVE THE STREAM, WHERE THE HUGE CYLINDERS ARE SUNK 25 FEET. THE DESIGN OF THE BRIDGE IS CREDITED TO MR H. B. HIGGINSON, WHO ALSO DESIGNED THE RAKAIA GORGE BRIDGE. IT WAS JUST ABOVE THE WAIMAKARIRI BRIDGE THAT MR A. D. DOBSON PROPOSED TO TAKE POWER, BUT THE LATER SCHEMES PROPOSE A DAM MANY MILES HIGHER UP THE STREAM.
