THE SCULLING TITLE.
HADFIELD’S WORK. (Special to the “ Star.”) WANGANUI, May 1. James Paddon cabled to the Wanganui correspondent of the “ Star ” on Saturday, stating that he would like to row the race with Hadfield before the end of June. This was in reply to a message intimating that Hadfield would not be leaving the Dominion till May 18, and would not be ready to row until July. It will be impossible for the challenger to get away until May 18, and he reckons that he wants not less than six weeks’ training on the other side before meetiug Paddon. A reply to that effect has been sent to the champion, and no hitch i> anticipated in the arrangements for the match. Since his arrival here, Hadfield has been afloat several times, doing some preliminary rowing. In. two or three spins he has been accompanied by Archie Sharpe and W. Webb. So far, of course, the work done bv the challenger has been of the solid variety only, but in a week or so he will be putting the pace on occasionally, and some idea may then be gathered as to how he will shape in Australia. He intends to try to increase his speed, and with this object will do more fast work over the short courses than when training previously. There has never been any question as to his staying ability, but what lie needs is to increase his brilliancy. Most sculling races are won by the man who leads at the mile, and Hadfield is anxious to ho able to hold Paddon over the first mile, as he is confident that in that case he could win. In a letter, Dick A rust states that he fully intended to challenge Paddon and row' him during the winter, but as Hadfield got in first Arnst has decided to drop out- of rowing for good. Dick has been shooting well recently. On April 22 he divided a £2OO match at Sydney, and on the Mondav following he won the championship of Australia. He was the only one to kill eighteen out of the twenty-two birds, which were an exceptionally fast lot.
