Arrangement* are being made by the committee oi'-t-he Forbury Park Trotting Olub with the owner of the recently imported American trotting stalhon, The Triumph, for the horse to attack the mile trotting record at the southern club’s meeting next week. The triumph hae an American record of 2min Sisec, accomplished on a half mile track. Unfortunately, in his first start in the Dominion, which was at the .New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting, he met with interference and was not seen at his best. The home ha* come to form rery quickly since bis. arrival, and it is hoped that he will be seen at Fiorbtiry Park, where his presence will be an increased attraction to the meeting. The winter meeting of the For bury Park Trotting Club, which will be commenced next Saturday, usually attracts a strong contingent of Southland-own «d pacers and trotters. Pr*« ticaJly all the racing its finished for fc-he season in Southland and as most of tli e form has been well exposed owners are attracted by the last eherie* of the season to win a stake. Tlie two-year-old pater Copra, by Audubon—Cocoanut, who war raced by A. Hendrickson at the Methl ven Trotting Chib’s meeting on Thursday, has been purchased by Mr F. Smith, and he will be trained by R. W. Oopra claim*, an engagement in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, to be decided at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s winter meeting in June. Present indicafcio-na suggest that Riocarton stables will not shelter quite so many two-year-olds next season as is usually the case. The J. D. Ormond Memorial Gold Cup will be decided at the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s meeting on Monday. The stake is not sufforently attractive to draw a representative field, so late in the season, while the scale of penalties also tends to keep the best horses away. There i«, however, a possibility of Rapine or King's Trumpeter being, a starter, also Kick Off, Sunart and Highland. The Leeeton sportsman. Mr J. HProsser, breeds all the horses that carry* his colours. He has four mares in his stud, and li« patronised three different sires this season. Early in his career he was a moderate performer and last winter he was qualified as a hunter, winning a hunters’ hurdle race at the Manawatu Hunt meeting. Lately he has developed a lot of pace and he now ranks as a very useful sprinter. Black Cruiser, who was among the winners at the Manawatu meeting last week, is a four-year-old by All Black from the San Francisco mare Cru-cine-lla. a good performer in her day, and the dam of the Oaks winner Isabel. Mr G. D. Greenwood is reducing his team, presumably to make room for youngsters. Pluto, Vespucci, Gupidon, Treseayr, Farceur, Parody and Heathcote are to be sold. Amythas is to be blistered ami turned out for a good spell at his owner’s place at Foxton. Doubts are expressed about his chance of standing another preparation. The 'Wellington owned mare, Royal Exchange, by King Rufus—Commerce, a winner on the flat and over hurdles, has been retired to the stud. She will be mated in the spring with Ab surd, to whom her dam produced Laughing Eyes. Mr L. K. S- Mack in non, chairman of the Victoria Racing Club, is the new owner of the Absurd mare Epitaph, who was sent to Australia recently. A new starting banier for the education of juveniles has been erected at Trentham since the autumn meethig- 1 1 is situated inside the training tracks between the mile and sevenfurlong posts. Much sympathy is felt for the wellknown North Island jockey, R. Hunt, who recently had the misfortune to lose his three-year old daughter. •30 far K illa-shandra has not been raced in Sydney but recent reports state that the Kdbronev gelding has been granted a 14.2 certificate,, so he can he expected to appear shortlv among the poni.-s. If he fails to take a high place it will be striking tribute to Sydney pony form, as KiUashanrlra is more than useful. Although I'he Hawk has not raced in Australia, he is reported to be training on satisfactorily and probablv he will be a competitor at the early spring meeting*. Jhe Zealand trainer, G. Price, now located in Sydney, is experiencing some bad luck with Stony, the best horse iu his charge, aa he has been narrowly defeated mon* than once lately. Price is getting a good team of horses_togethei. some of his patrons being buyers at the Svdnev vearlint sales. “ ' . Like most New Zealanders who have visited Sydney. the North Island trainer. W. H. Dwyer, likes the climate over there. Another great advantage is that a trainer and his horse* can be home every night instead of travelling long distances in the Dominion and taking several days to go to ami from a meeting. With reference to the failure of New Zealand horses in handicap* in Sydney, he says the animals are more or less boomed here and on the other side, and in consequence generally get a weight they cannot win with. An owner either wants to have something as good as Gloaming, to take on all comers, or maiden horses without any performances. Still Sea. who ran well enough to set beaten by the narrowest of margins on a couple of occasions, b e blistered and turned out for a spell. Later on lie may pav another visit to the other side. Reports from Trentham credit Tigeiland with being in good fettle for early cross-con n try engage men ts. He t*h aped well in a school over the Trentham fences a few’ days ago. Insurrection and Trespass returned from Sydney a few days ago. in charge of W. Hawthorne. Trespass finished third in a mile and a half race at ftandwiok but Insurrection went wrong on the trip. Both horses will be spelled for a couple of months. Mr J. E. Brien. of the Kingsheld stud. New South Wales, who returned to Australia recently after a kmg absence abroad, has given an Australian pressman an idea of the big price* ruling iffl England for blood stock. Giving an instance, he said that at the Newmarket sales in December last, Prestongrange, who had won only one race, was passed in at £2700. An offer of £3OOO made subsequently by Mr Brien failed to attract the owner, who pointed out that if he parted with the horse at the figure he would be unable replace him at the money with one u to lead ” Tow’n Guard, one of the Derby favourites. Yearlings m England brought- about five times the prices commanded in Australia, while if one of the family chanced to win a race the_ brothers and sisters were immediately in keen demand at enhanced price*.
