RICCARTON RECORDS

WHARENUI SCHOOL. There aeouis to be a healthier interest, too, in school aifairs tins year. Lt will be remembered that, at the annual meeting of householders last April there were no nominations of commitand a further meeting was convened to elect a committee. This year seven out of last year’s nine members v.ill probably reoffer their services, viz., Alessrs C. W. Barrel!, J. Singleton, A. Staunton, T. W. Stephenson J. J. Staples, G. J. C. Telford and S. F. AVilson. Air Tuck is retiring, after serving for two or three terms, and Air G. Dickinson has left the district to reside in Christchurch. At least three new candidates are spoken of. The nominations close on Alonday evening, and the election takes place on the following Alonday. It is rather a pity that the announcement by the Education Board is so meagre, and i« published so long before the date of nomination.

ST JAMES’S CHURCH. Last Sunday a harvest festival in L connection with St James’s church was held in the Town Hall, where for the • present all church services are held, i The hall was tastefully decorated. Donations of. fruit, vegetables, jams and calies were given. These, according to custom, are sent t-o St Saviour’s oiphapage. lb-ogress is being made with the new church by the architects and builders, Aleesrs S. and A. Luttrell. The blue and white stone work is already giving an indication that a beautiful building will be erected. It is unfortunate that mischievous per- ; sons interfere with this work during j week-ends. Complaints have been fre- ! qnent from the masons for some weeks. ; VHARENUI FOOTBALL CLUB. The Darfield Football Club played a | return match against the "YVharenui j Club last Saturday. AYbarenui scored } three, points l/t try by R. Glubb) in the ! first spell, and successfully defended j their line against the visitors till time J was called. The Darfield men were the guests of supporters of the local cmub at tea, and in the evening a dance was tendered them in the Riccarton Town Hall. The attendance was good, and the function proved very enjoyable. Air V. 31. Mitchell, tlie club’s secretary, was 31. C.. Mr Alartin supplied the music, and Mesdames W. Brown. A. 3fitebell and Staples superintended the commissariat.

CITIZENS’ ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Kiccarton Citizens’ Association was ndci in me an do- room ot tne town flail on ivionuay last, toeverai new members were elected. Ali* A. if. lord, who has been iviayor of tne Riccarton Borough for tne yarn, iour years, toojv a very active part in the formation of the borough thirteen years ago. hie was one ox the first councillors. Councillor A. E. Steere is deputymayor and chairman, ot Fiectric ingot and. Power Committee. He has been a member or tne council tor the past •tight years and has taken an active part in the art airs or tne borough. Mr H. Vise, who Ins served eight years on the council, has been chairman of the Works Committee for about six Councillor T. At. Ford has served two years on the council. It was mainly owing to his efforts that the Riccarton Post Office was established. Councillor A. Fisher, who has served two years on the council, has also proved himself an earnest worker as a member of the finance and other commit lees. Air H. Gudsell is a former councillor of five years’ standing. He wa* an active member of the "Works Committee. Air J. T. Peters and Air 31. Alanhire represent the new area. Mr R, H. Rankin is a well known builder in Riccarton. He has been connected with many associations and

societies. BOROUGH COUNCIL ELECTION. It seems certain that a poll will be i required to elect the councillors for i the new term. Two years ago tube whole council was returned unopposed, j The borough ha» grown since then, and from the new area comes Air 8. A. Stables, whose nomination is already in. He is standing as an independent. So tar there is nothing definite from the Addington end of the borough. It is rumoured that Mr R. 8. Draper will alicyw himself to be nominated. The old council had two members from the; southern end, Alessrs W. Charters and J. Alunnings, but both hare retired. Jt seems probable that there will be a Labour ticket. PERSONAL. Mr W. E. Snowball, of Pjcton. Avenue, who has been undergoing another spell in hospital, is now reported to be progressing finely. Airs R. rf. Denton and her son have returned to their home in Rarakeke Street. Air and Airs L. Treleaven. of 52, St raven Road i are at present on holiday in the North Island. No chronicle of the week would be complete without mention of Riccarton’s loss through the death of the late All* Alex. Boyle, who for many years had resided in this borough. The death of Air Boyle has left a gap which we can hardly hope to fill. He will be missed sorely, as he was a friend of every good movement, and a helper in many an unfortunate case. The residents of the borough extend their deepest sympathy to Airs Boyle and family , in their loss. Aluch sympathy is felt for Mrs Whittaker in the loss of her husband. The late Air Whittaker was many years works manager of Booth. Macdonald | and C-o. Air Whittaker was an able engineer, with experience in American, English and French worshops.
