RUMANIAN UNREST.

REVOLUTION REPORTS j UNCONFIRMED. By Telegraph—Frets Association—Copyright i Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, April 10. In the House of Commons, Mr Ronald M’Xeill. Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, said he had no information of any sorb that would lead him to believe that the report of a revolution in Rumania was correct. A previous message from Bucharest ! a day or two ago stated that the poli- ; tical unrest was unabated, and there j was some talk of a coup d’etat. The i Westminster Gazette’s •*’ diplomatic! correspondent in Rumania stated that tlie Government was evidently alive to : the danger of a revolution, though it denied that this was due to the Gov- j eminent forcing a change in the constitution, wlxich the minorities regard - as an attempt to centralise power in ’ the hands of the old Rumanian olig- ’ archy. The Hungarians in Transylvania and the Saxonians, Serbs and Germans • in Banat, are all in a. state of unrest, j The Hungarians regard the attempt by j the Central Government to deprive ; them of local civil autonomy as tin- s justifiable. The Saxonians are also op- I posed to being Absorbed. Moreover, j all the landed proprietors fear being j dispossessed iu favour of Rumanian j peasants. Transylvania is now obliged to import wheat, as the peasants who ! acquired land are unable to work it j The Government’s efforts to restore the j railways have met with little success. ( There has been a phenomenal fall in J the rate of exchange, and the recent j loan was a failure, so that there are j many elements of unrest which may I culminate in a revolution. Fortun- i ately for the Government, racial cliv- j isions and jealousies afford a certain j security. The old Rumanians are nn- : ited. and as they number fifty per cent ; of the population, they may be able j to deal with the. other national ole- ! ments. Hungary is following events j with great interest, as she fears that j the reparations now being arranged j will be crushing and she is in no posi- j tion to offer resistance.
