OVERNIGHT SUMMARY. A new chapel at the Girls’ Friendly Society s hostel, erected by means of a bequest made by the late Mr W. Welch, was dedicated yesterday by his Grace Archbishop Julius. A meeting of girls convened by Miss Marjorie Black, national Y.M.C.A. organiser of girls’ clubs, has decided to form a girls’ club in Sydenham. The meeting undertook to do its best to raise half of the £SCO necessary for its establishment. A conference of officers of the State Forestry Service has begun in Wellington. Sir Heaton Rhodes, Minister of Forestry, told the conference that the post year was the first in the history of forestry in New Zealand that the forestry policy of the Government was self-supporting. Th© receipts for the fiscal year just closed stood at £63,266, an increase of £32,430 over the previous year’s figures. In reply to the statement of a Stipendiary Magistrate that Cathedral Square should be made free of tram way traffic, the general manager of the Tramway Board states that it would be possible to reduce the amount of traffic in. and around the Square, but only by removing tramway terminals to points further out, and incurring expenditure which the position did not justify.
The adjourned conference of repre sentatives of various philanthropic organisations to consider the question of arranging a suitable scheme to control public appeals was held yesterday. It was decided to recommend the adoption of a scheme similar to that in force in some American towns. Under this a board of trustees is set- up to decide upon the methods of collecting the money and itg expenditure. The meeting referred the matter to the Progress League to set up a committee representative of various philanthropic bodies. The Government has decided against any interference with the price of flour, bran and pollard under the agreement between millers and farmers’ representatives. The Government says that the collective prices named in the agreement is to a relatively small extent higher than was warranted by the agreed prices of wheat and the probable average cost of production and distribution during the current year. The annual meeting of the Canterbury Builders’ Association was held last night. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £l6l 9s 3d. Members’ subscriptions amounted to £214 2s. The following officers wer© elected : President. Mr W. Williamson; vicepresidents, Messrs J. Graham and G. L. Bull; secretary. Mr R. E. Nightingale ; treasurer. Mr H. Pearce ; committee, Messrs R. C. Jamieson, IT. Hinkey, R. L. Scott, J. Francis, W. H. Winsor, E. R. Husband and N. M’Gillivray. A sub-committee set up by the council of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce to consider the question of lifting the embargo on German trade is of opinion that if it is considered hy the Government of Great Britain as being in the interests of the Mother Country and her Dominions and tending to restore more stable economicconditions in the world, that Germany should be allowed to trade with other countries, New Zealand should not shut the door against German trade. Householders’ meetings for the election of school committees will be held cn Monday, April 23. At a meeting of the Port Christchurch League last night it was decided to support the following candidates for the Lyttelton Harbour Board at the coming election : —City seats -- Dr Thacker. Messrs E. J. Howard, M. Geo. Scott and T. H. Darker. Combined district of Woolston. Sumner. Brighton. Lyttelton and Akaroa— Mr J. Longton. Ashburton—Mr H. M. Jones. It is expected that the Speaker of the House of Representatives (Hon C. E. Statham) will issue a warrant for the Oamaru by-election on Saturday next, that is to say, ten clear days after the declaration of the vacancy, as a result of the election having been declared void by the Electoral Court. The polling, the date for which will be fixed bv the Clerk of the Writs, must fall within twenty-eight days of the issue of Mr Speaker’s warrant.
