A VICE-REGAL TROPHY.

DEERHEAD STOLEN BY PRACTICAL JOKER. (Per Press As»ociatiox ) DUNEDIN, April 10. The Governor-General (Lord JellicoeJ returned to Cromwell last night from a cleer stalking expedition at Makaiora, at the head of Lake Wanaka, where he was very successful. One head which he secured is a splendid specimen, with a spread of forty-eight inches. It is a thirteen-pointer, or which his Excellency is justly proud. Few finer heads have come out of this forest. The whole trip has unfortunately been somewhat marred by what was evidently intended as a joke at his Excellency’s expense, but one which did not reflect credit on the perpetrator. After his Excellency’s arrival at Cromwell this fine head was on exhibition at his hotel, and, shortly before 11 p.m., it mysteriously disappeared, and failure to discover it created a serious position. The police were immediately on the track, but, even with the assistance of the townsfolk, no trace could be found. His Excellency had to depart from Cromwell by train tins morning without it. The townspeople individually continued the search, and were rewarded about nine o'clock, when the head Was found behind a fence opposite the hotel. ,v car was immediately dispatched to catch the train, which it did at Omakau. Lord Jellicoe was met at the Alexandra railway station by the school children, who were addressed by his Excellency, and ihe children were granted a holiday. The Governor-General arrived a: Dunedin to-night, and will leave for Invercargill on Thursday, where he will be tendered a civic reception. On Sat nrdav he will embark on TT.M.S. Chatham at the Bluff on route for Stewart Island. He will return to Duneclin on April 17. and leave for Christchurch I on April 23.
