A TIMBER PEST.
AN AUSTRALIAN DANGER. B.» Telegraph—Press Association—Copy right Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. SYDNEY, April 0. The statement has been publisher! in Sydney papers that the Nov.- Zealand Forestry Department lias discovered a large grub nest in a shipment of Australian hardwood. The pest, however, which is most feared amongst builders and householders here, and which has undoubtedly caused and is causing serious damage, is the small dust and allied borers, the presence of which is less easily discovered bv non-experts than the larger and hotter-known grub, and whose ravages and spreading propensities are far more to be guarded against. The Forestry Department and building trades have been conducting exhaustive investigations, with a view to checking this pest, and claim to have discovered various remedies for preserving the woods from attack, or of ridding them of the pest after they are infested. The matter is regarded as one of serious importance to the timber trade generally.
