BOOKMAKER FINED.
CAUGHT BY DECOY BET. TWO PREVIOUS CONVICTIONS. (Psjr Press Association.) DUNEDIN, April 6. r L r ,s Nathaniel Curtis was fined —4UO for carrying on business as a bookmaker. The Sub- Inspector of Police stated that on April 3. when racing was in progress in Christchurch. a man was sent to the accused to make a bet. Incidentally the horse won, and paid a good dividend. Before this, however, detectives appeared on the scene, when a marked ten-shilling note was found in the possession of accused, who also had £lll in notes and £l4B in cheques. He was quite frank, admitting the offence. He had not been previously convicted in Dunedin, but had been twice fined in Christchurch. Counsel for the defendant stated that the man who had given the defendant awav had had a diffeience with Curtis and set himself to trap him. Further, he had gone afterwards to Curtis and asked him for enough money to leave the country. The Magistrate stated that Curtis, having been given a good character, he did not propose to send him to prison.
