PRICE TO BE FOURPENCE. Information from Wellington states that an increase in the price of sugar has been made, bringing the retail price up to 4cl per lb. The retail price of sugar in Christchurch i R still 3|d per lb. It will be increased to 4d within a few days, when stocks bought at the old rates have been exhausted. Referring to the Government’s derision to supplement short Fijian supplies by importing sugar from Java, a local grocer remarked We have no comment to make. It will be time enough for that when we handle the sugar, well refined, mixes with the Fijian product.” COMMENT IN DUNEDIN. (Pjiit Press Association.) DUNEDIN, April 5. Managers of distributing firms consider that the Government lias broken faith with business people, by increasing the price of sugar and continuing to control distribution after June. One merchant stated, regarding the importations ol Java, sugar, that some time ago it was suggested by local importers that it the Government would give a guarantee that no duty would be imposed on Javan sugar, they could land parcels at a lower price than the Sugar Company was charging New Zealand storekeepers. but the Government had persistently stated that the quality of Java sugar was unsuitable. The general opinion of traders is that the sooner the Government drops the control the better.
