MOTOR FATALITY.

CAR HITS STRAY HORSE AT KAIAPOI.

YOUNG MAN KILLED INSTANTLY. A fa-tal motor-car accident, which occurred on the Beach Road (Poplar Avenue) between Kaiapoi and Kairaki at an early hour this morning, resulted in the death of Edward Kenneth Manttan. a commercial traveller, twenty-two years of age, who resided at 28, Queen s Avenue. Fendalton, am. who was employed hy Messrs Rattray and Son, merchants. Christchurch. The car struck a horse and overturned, and Mr Manttan was killed instantly-

The driver, who was the Only other J occupant of the car, T ~as Arthur Midg- • ley, motor garage proprietor, of New Brighton, and he escaped without injury. It appears that Mr Manttan, who had a bach ”at Now Brighton, had been with a party to Kairaki earlier in the evening. On returning to New Brighton. Mr Manttan found that he had left an overcoat behind, and he employed Mr Midgley to drive him back to Kairaki to pick it up. The car left New Brighton about midnight. Whilst the car was proceeding down Poplar Avenue, also known as Beach Road, two herses suddenly appeared from between the trees. The driver endeavoured to avoid the animals, but in doing so the car struck one horse on the off side hind leg. and. from indications, then collided with a tree about twelve yards from where it lav overturned. The car was turned completely round. The roadway between : the trees is eight yards wide. One of the horses was owned by Mr I\. Kelly, and had been grazing at Mr K. M’Tntosh’s farm. Manttan was a single man. twentytwo years of age. and resided with bis mother at No 28. Queen’s Avenue, Fendalton. He had been employed by the firm of J. Rattray and Sons. Ltd, wholesale merchants, of Christchurch, for about three years, and during the past eighteen months was junior sales- ™ The driver of the oar was Allan Cordner Midgley, of the firm of Fitcbotfc and Midgley, taxi-cab proprietors, Brighton. It is understood that after Midgley regained consciousness he obtained assistance from some people named M’ln tosh, who were living close to where the accident occurred. The body is at present at Kaiapoi, where the inquest will he held.
