March 24. will close at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s '■.r»ce at eight o'clock on Friday night. Clean Sweep, who has only recently resumed work, is to lie tried as a hurdler, a branch ot the racing gair.2 for which he was destined early in his career. So far he has done well in his schooling, and a horse with such good credentials as a galloper should develop into a good-cla-ss hurdler CF be only takes properly to the jumping side of the business. Red Gown continues to get through useful schooling, and indications point to the All Red mare malting a good performer over hurdles. Indus has been shaping well lately over hurdles. His stable mate, Tiv>vella. is also doing satisfactory schooling for a novice, but he will require a lot of education yet before he is a firstclass jumper. T. H. Gillett has Manawapango doing useful work. He may be raced over hurdles for a time prior to taking on steeplechases again in the winter. The Licensing Committee of the Racing Conference has withdrawn the licenses of J. Croskery (trainer) and R. Olive (jockey). When Peneua fell in the R-akaitai Welter at the Dannevirke meeting, says a northern writer, his rider, C. Stowe, was allowed to lie motiouless on” the course for nearly ten minutes before the driver of the ambulance could be found. When it did eventually proceed to the scene of the accident, the crowd booted. The North Island jockey, H. Stuart, has bad his license restored aTter a brief suspension, and he rode two winners at the Dannevirke meeting last week. Bv his win in the Ascot Vale Stakes, at the Victoria Racing Club’s meeting this week. The Monk gave further evidence that lie is in the front rank of this season’s two-year-olds in Australia, at anyrate up t-o six furlongs. The fa?t that ho is by Absurd, however, will prejudice- most people against Rationales brother as a candidate for Derby honours upxt season. But, even it he fails as a three vear-old. be has already done enough to justify the Victorian owner. Mr G. Tyo. in paying 1200 gs for him as a yearling. Imputation, who won the Bourke Handicap, on the second day of the Victoria Racing Club’s meeting, has a pedigree that is of special interest in New Zealand. His sire. Reputation, was bred in the Dominion, being by Martian from the Nordenfeldt mare Stepfeldt (sister to Stepniak), whose other contributions to the stud book included Elevation. Gravitation and Provocation, all good winners. Reputation was a high-class galloper, among his three-year-old successes being the Champion Plate. Canterbury Cun, Stead Cup and Great Northern Derby. As p four-year-old he went to Sydney, whore he dead-heated with St Cn.rwyne in the Spring Stakes, while later in the same meeting he was third in the Metropolitan Handicap (carrying 8.13). and second in the Craven Plate (Woorak third). At the Easter fixture at Randwick he won the Autumn Stakes, after which he was retired to the stud. So far. however, he has not had much success as a sire. Lady Wallace, the dam of Imputation, also has an interest; for New Zealanders, as she i,s the Wallace mare who ran third to the late. Mr G. G. Stead's pair. Noctuiform and Sun god. in the A.J.C. Derby of 1905 Lady Wallace has been a stud success, ber progeny including Cisco, who won the A.J.C. Derby of 1911. The success of Prince Cox in the Aua tralian Cup will arouse further interest

in an incident which occurred in Sydney a few weeks ago. when the horses if the Newcastle coal magnate. Mr J. Brown, were removed from F. J. Marsien’s stable and placed under the care :>t S. Lamond. “ Pilot.’’ of the Sydney • Referee." had the following to say .n rhe subject at the time: “Although Mr J. Brown had changed trainers -m several previous occasion, a rupture between him and F. J. Marsden was some thing not anticipated. Since the latter took over .Mr Brown’s horses from J. Barden about throe anil a half years ago. he has done well. In that period big races won by him for Mr Brown included Victoria Derby. Chelmsford Stakes. Willi am stown Cup and dead heat A.J.C. Derby—Richard Main; Sydney Cup and dead heat Anniversarv Handicap—Prince Charles; December i Stakes —Pel aw Main ; and Challenge Stakes—Duke Isinglass. In addition. Marsden prepared several other winners for Mr Brown, and inclusive of place money the return has been over £30.000. There is very little room for Mr Brown to find fault with that- side y f the business ; and. as stated bv Marsden in a contemporary. the sale md suhseouei\t retention of Prince Cox V-Aeo responsible for Mr Brown’s action. Prince Cox was one of the latter a horses sold at auction early last yea-; property of another patron, and. on being resold recently at a high figure, be still remained with Marsden. Mr Brown is not in Australia, but Air J Grisdale is representing him in racing matters, and ho doubt ns a result of n • able, ho notified the trainer that all Mr Brown’s horses, with their gear, were to be handed over.

The champion trotting m are R-eta Peter worked out a mile and a half at New Brighton this morning, having Auguste Dilio-n for a companion over the last mile. The time recorded for the distance was fast. Unfortunately, after the work-out Reta Peter was obviously lalne in her off hind leg, the seat of the old trouble that caused her withdrawal at the last moment from her last New Zealand Trotting Cup. A. G. Wilson will have a difficult task to keep the champion long enough in work to take her to the races. The pacing mare Onyx has been turned o-ut for some time, but it is the intention of her owner to bring her in next week and have her trained for engagements late in the season. J. H. Wilson is now located in the stables at New Brighton lately occupied by R. Pollock. IV. Warren is now working Dusky Loeanda in saddle, and is riding her himself. The winner at Motukar&ra. has greatly improved both in speed and manners. Tj. Denton is getting Dandy Rose into good racing conmtwn. The pacer Wet Day is now being trained at New Brighton. Mr Robson has disposed of his share in the pacer Asturio, who is still far from sound. W. Smith is giving his two pacers plenty of work, and both Royal Oak and Wild Sunset are pacing well in saddle. Mr H. Brinkman seems to have ?o doubt that. Logan Chief is easily the best three-year-old pacer in the Dominion. In the Timaru Handicap no has placed the Logan Pointer gelding on the back mark. 84yds. handicapping him at 4.31. and making him concede j 72yds to Acron and Event. On this es- | timate the New Zealand Derby, to ho I decided at New Brighton next month, i will he a much better r »ce through the j absence of Logan Chief. The three year-old pacer. Acron. is 1 going on well in his work at AddingI ton. and he may lie a competitor next week in the Timaru Handicap, in whicii he is not badly handicapped on a 4.37 mark. Don Wild, the brilliant, free-legged pacer, is at present having a spell, as a result of injuries to a foot, caused by contact with a barbed wire. Earl Derby, the crack three-year-old i from West Australia, null arrive, here j this week, and will go into B. Jarden’s stable. | The Auckland trotting trainer. W. I Kelsey, contemplates a trip to Christ- ! church with Moneymaker, First Carj bine and Promenade, who will compote j at the Easter meeting of the New Zeai land Metropolitan Trotting Club.
