DEBT TO AMERICA.
DEADLOCK REACHED.

The American and British Debt-Fund-ing Commissions have virtually reached a deadlock over the adjustment of interest, upon which question the British sought a forty-eight hour postponement. in order to communicate with the Home Government. It is understood that the British Delegation has informed the Americans that it has been instructed to remain firm in insisting on a long maturity period, and interest as low as three per cent, to which the American Commission did not agree. It is believed that Mr Montagu Xorman, Governor of the Bank of England, will remain in America for some time, should an agreement not be reached.
WEST INDIES PROFOSAL.
WASHINGTON. January 17. The White House has intimated that, it does not favour the suggestion to acquire British West Indies in pay merit of the British debt. The Administration does not care to be burdened with any \ additional possessions at this time, feeling that it has a sufficient task in attending to the administration of the Philippines and of Porto Rico. Senator Reed introduced a resolution into the Senate authorising the President to communicate with Britain and France regarding the transfer of their West Indian Islands in payment of war debts to the United States. The resolution mentioned Trinidad, the Bermudas, Martinique, the Lesser Antilles, Grand Terre, Guadelope and Marimallente.
A SENATOR’S OPINION.
WASHINGTON, January 17. Senator M’Kellar, in a speech, said Britain was maintaining the most expensive army in the world, financing the purchases of oil land in various parts of the world, and lending money to foreign countries, and she was well able to pay her war debt to the United States. “In every transaction we had with Britain during the war.” he I said, " she put the matter on a business j basis.
