EGG-LAYING COMPETITIONS.

PAPANTJI. Egsr»production is much bettor this week than for corresponding weeks in past years at the New Zealand Utility Poultry Club's competitions. It ia usual for fowls to steady down considerably in their produo* tion towards the end of December, but the birds at Papanui have only slackened off some four dozen eggs a week less than th'6 best September and October weekly totals. S. J j. Boer’s No. 30, Smart Bros.’ No. 1 and ,r. Firth's No. 1 single bird laid the possible for the week, and Rood laying with the three birds was done by the teams of Mrs Gorinski 18, H. K. Drewetf* Black Orpington is a good second with 260 eggs for the same period. Seventr-tive per cent of the fowls complied with the *2oz egg standard for the middle six months. All the ducks laid eggs averaging well over 2ttoz per dozen. The Management Committee has decided to keep a record of H. Williams's No. 3 White Leghorn as it ha* a chance of averaging 2oa eggs for the year, and its total yield for the nine months is 299 eggs. Mr H. K. Martin, the well-known veterinary surgeon, is running second in the light breed* three-bird aggregate totals. The team were bred by G. H. Bradford. Mr J. Feldwiok's ten bird* all drew the 2oz egg average. It ia generally admitted that the forty White Leghorns competing in the championship teat are poor specimens of their breed, not more than half a dozen being suitable for breeding pens. There are no loss than five distinct types of Leghorns; Ihifi Should not be in a championship class. Mr T.
