January 10 j The “ Lokel Anzeiger” states that ' Lithuania, profiting by the inter- I national situation, is sending two regi- 1 inents to occupy Memo!. Mcrtiel is the northernmost territory I of the former German Empire. . The ! town of Memel is situated at the north j end of the Kurirches Haft, a lagoon of the Baltic, seventy-two miles northeast of Konigsberg. and close to the Russian frontier. It has a specious harbour. Great quantities of bunker coal and other products of Lithuania have, in the past, been shipped from this port. At the conclusion of the war, Memel was ceded to- the Allies The province has an area of 1057 square miles, and a population of 140,746. The independence of the Lithuanian State was proclaimed on February 16. 1918 The Lithuanian Government has been recognised by most of the Great Powers FTrirr Ny Russia. The State was admitted to the League of Nations on September 21. 1921 Tt has an army i of approximately 50,000 men.
