CROQUET.

CANTERBURY TOURNAMENT. The Canterbury croquet tournament was continued yesterday, play commencing at 10 a-m. at the United greens. The results were:— LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP. Final. Best of three games. Miss Gerard beat Mrs Murray-Aynsley. 2-1. Mrs Murray-Aynsley In the first game seemed quite off colour and oould not get going at all. Miss Gerard, although her croquet was by no means brilliant, played very steadily and well deserved her victory. The score was 26-G. In the earlier stages of the second gam© Mrs Murray Aynsley was brilliant, making several good breaks and reaching tho rover hoop before Miss Gerard was properly, started. However, a fine break of ten hoops, during which sho pegged one of her opponent’s balls, gave Miss Gerard a good chance of winning but attempting safety play slie hit too hard and went out,. Mrs Aynsley finishing with the score 26-21. The third game was by no means as interesting as the other two. Miss Gerard by sound play established a good lead and held her position till the end when the score was 26-15. Mrs Murray Aynsley, who won the championship last year, occasionally in this game showed brillia-nee, but towards the end—the set lasted nearly eight hours—she tired visibly and Miss Gerard’s steady play secured her the title.
