Special trains for the Ashburton trot* -aill leave Christchurch at 9.15 a.m. and 5 .85 a.m. on Tuesday* The Canterbury Park Trotting Club's meeting, to be held on January 1 and •*. Trill hq p * *»■ --'’l inaugurate the club*e occupation of the Addington course. Acceptances for the mow a latv*, *v ill c.oow w..* .. - Racing enthusiasts in New Zealand are well catered for throughout the year, but the Christmas and New Year holiday season is specially popular with clubs, the result boing that there are few districts which cannot claim a meeting within easy travel. The widest interest will be created by the meeting of the Auckland Racing Club which opens on Tuesday, and lasts four days, while sandwiched between then are the three days of the Auckland 'l'rotting Club’s fixture, which will be started on Wednesday. Representative lields uro engaged at both meetings, the trotting <*iub having us an additional attraction the presence of a strong contingent of Australian horses. The Manawatu Racing Club will provide good sport next week for th.? southern part of the North Island, while the Taranaki Jockey Club will cater for a more local community. Tn the South Island the Dunedin Jockey Club will provide two days’ sport, w hich on this occasion looks like reaching a high standard. On the West (’oast the Westland Racing Club and tlie Westport Trotting Club will cater for the pleasure of largo crowds. So far as Christchurch sportsmen arc concerned, the Ashburton Trotting Club will furnish a fin.- opportunity for a day's enjoyment on Tuesday, when the (lore Trotting Club will also hold its meeting. Riccarton stables will be. well represented in the Auckland Cup. Foo (*how has got through sonic useful work since he rail second in the New Zealand Cup, but Royal Star has gone on even better and he will bo hard to beat. Winning Hit has come strongly into favour lately, but he may not quite see the journey out. Queen March may be favourite for the Great Northern Foal Stakes, but she will meet strong opposition from the throe Riccarton candidates. Mnrihaupo showed good form at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting, while Wild Hind and Top Score have probably improved since then.
Glentruin will be very hard to heat, in the Auckland Railway Handicap. The English-bred mare has done oxicptionally well since she raced at Riccarton. Mr E. Riddiford’s pair. Royal Box and Scion, should plav a prominent part in the Auckland Cup. Boomerday's Auckland Cup pros peefcs look bright, after his recent winning form. Limelight will probably start favour ite in the Otago Handicap. a« she defierves to do, as her recent track form has been brilliant. • • Sunny Loch has raced unluckily this season hut he may make amends during the holiday*. He is very well Dinner Bell should get some of tho money in the two-year-old events at tho Dunedin meeting. Riccarton track form suggests that Gay Life will run well in minor events at southern holiday fixtures. Wharf©dale has been galloping -well lately and he should run prominently in h is engagements at Wingatui. Pilliewinkie i* an improving young horse, who should pay his way on the southern holiday circuit. Gamester, a Gay Lad colt who is engaged in two-year-old events at the Dunedin meeting, is a useful galloper, who looks like developing into a good performer. Many Kittle only requires average luck to win a race at one of the southern meetings during the holidays. Red Gown has bc*»n going well in her work lately and she should pay her way at the holiday fixtures in the south. Marque teur will be hard to boat in tho Manawatu Cup. Ho is quite at home on the course, where he registered n fine performance last autumn, in winning the Awapuni Gold Cun i he improving Merry Day may prove his most dangerous opponent. If Statuette is hack to her best form she should win some money in the sprint events at the Manawatu meeting. The annual meeting of the Gore Trotting Club will be held on Boxing Day. The meeting is the most important trotting fixture held in th? Southland province, which is very strong for the pacer and trotter, buc is very badly nerved regarding totalisetor “ permits, there being only two clubs in the province with the right to use*the machine. Very large acceptances have been received for all the events, and in addition to locii horses tho good stakes have attracted a fair number of visitors. The chief event at Gore is the flora Cup, of £dCQ, and GwenchiM. Prospect. Huia Bird. George the Fourth anl Countryman are Canterbury candidates for the good stake. The lastnamed is looked upon as likely to show up very prominently. Last year W. .1. Morland was successful with Lany Joan, who from the limit of tho han dieap had to go fast to win. It 13 stated that Countryman, who has not yet won a race, has been specially prepured for this two mile event Fashion Queen, however, raced well nt Forburv Park early this month, and she is a seasoned pacer, who may ke?n Mr Morland’s representative busy.
Osier Beauty will contest the Juvenile Stakes at Gore and ou she is on'y conceding thirty-six yards she should hive little difficulty in winning, provided she begins right.
Mostr ot the Canterbury representatives til the Gore Cup are also engaged in the mile and a quarter event, but; the earlier racing will have a big in fluence on the result of the sprint race.
The New Brighton trainer, J. N. dark©, will drive General Link in his engagements at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting.
The pacer Golden Peter, after a short spell, is again in commission at New Brighton under the charge of A G. "Wilson. Tho son of Petereia looks very well.
“Argus.”
E. Carlyon tn tends making another effort to train Reappear. This promising young paoer wont wrong just when he seemed likely to get into really good company. Tvv Irvington is being given plentv of work by G. Robinson and she is on vlie improve. It will be some time before FT. Frost ! has the big Nelson Bingen—Country j Belle gelding rcadv for racing. In the | meai;time, the youngster is progressing ■ satisfactorily in his training work. j Partner docs not look to be thori oughly wound up for a hard race. It was owing to being caught in the tapes that he failed to go away at the stare of the Waimairi Handicap last Saturday nt New Brighton The pacer Petrova is obviously sore and Ns not likely to do much more successful racing. Until an improvement can be effect- ; ed in Havrincourt Wood’s track man- / nors he is not likely to be successful i on southern track*. This horse ha:; f plenty of speed nut lie hangs in so j badly thut he cannot do his. best on left } handed tracks. lie should be a good i proposition to raco in Auckland. Tf the trotter Milltown over settles ' down to race kindly he will not be long before r, inning a race. He lias plenty of speed and a good action, but I up to the present he has been verv un reliable. i E. Carlyon bar; persevered with Downfall ami now seems as though he has got tho son of Great Audubon and I’.T.C. going properly. He is a big pacer and possibly requires more time , to thoroughly develop. i T.ocanda Dillon is not so far being j . sent along at top speed by A. G. Wil- ; son, but the hard pulling pacer is get- ! j ting through a solid preparation. His I trainer is experiencing no difficulty in j managing him on the track and* has • discarded th< patent gear wit h •.-. hich I tlie horse was last raced. j Browmvood is training on satisfacj torily and will probably be taken to j llu Wellington Trotting Club’s meetI ing to compote in tho chief two mile i harness event. ’ J. Armstrong has started on a half brother to Brown wood, by Logan Printer, and he will shortly' have Tinft her of the family, fdlv bv Our Thorpe from Brown Bell to educate and train. Ouimet seems to he improving with racing and is now pacing in good style under liis owner’s charge. The pacer Prmzor» i s so far not slaving; too well in ids work-outs at Now Brighton, but lie has not been long in work. W. Warren is still a t work with j fivar, who raced really well at the recent meeting of the New Brighton Trotting Club, considering the short Time ho had been in work. Proud Locan who raced so wo]] nt tho New Brighton 'Trotting Club’s meeting, is being kept up to his work am: looks none the worse for his recent racing. Ken Tracey is Fast* getting into form •mu 11. Frost should" soon have this pacer at his best for racing purposes ASHBURTON TROTS. With no racing in Christchurch on j Boxing Day. local sportsmen will j patronise the Ashburton Trotting l (Nub’s meeting, which has grown io I one of the most popular functions out side the larger centres. The Ashburj ton district is solid for tlie trotter and pader, and all its meetings arouse great interest. A few of the club’; meetings of recent years have suffered from very large fields, but this objection is gradually being obviated, and for Tuesday’s racing the fields are not abnormally large. With the exception of those horses visiting other parts of the Dominion, all the be>t in commission in Canterbury are engaged at the meeting, and it is certain to be. a successful fixture. Tlie slow class events are certain o be keenly contested and it is almost sure that some fast times will be recorded in these races. There is a field of nineteen for the chief two mile event and this should result in a keen contest. Prince Lyons raced badly at New Brighton, and so did Rorke’s Drift, Cammie. Oaknut and Hayseed, so that the exception of Oratorio those on th-' limit oi the handicap appear to possess little chance. Colonut raced well at New Brighton and this may have (lone him good, ?•> that an even better performance ran confidently be looked for from the New Brighton-trained pacer. Ohilde Pointer looks to possess a great chance, handicapped at 4mm 36 s cc. Bismurate could not stav out a mile and a quarter at New Brighton, so has no chance. Svmpathv and Ouimet, both winners at New Brighton, should show no well. The last-named seems to possess the chance. Star Queen lias been racing so con sistently that a win would be well received. I doubt if Partner is ready yet for a solid two mile journey, but Whispering Willie has to be reckoned with on account*of recent winning form. Vilo is not likely to improve ns much as some of those handicapped in front of the Waimate-owned marc.
WANGANUI NOTES
(Special to the Ci Star.”) WANGANUI, December 22. F. Tilley's team, which «has been taken to Ellerslie, consists of Tukia, Enthusiasm, Equitable and Para. Prior to leaving Fordoll the quartet had been doing excellent work, and it is confidently expected that they will run prominently in their engagements. Equitable put up a good gallop re contly oxer a mile and a quarter, and bo should run a big race in the Auckland Cup. Tukia has been sprinting m fine form, and she ought to make things very interesting for the opposition in tho Foal Stakes. Para is said to have improved since she raced at Riccarton. Enthusiasm is expected to show her best form at Ellerslie. It ici understood that Tamatete is in splendid fettle, and bis connections are confident that lie will give a big account of himself in the Palmerston North Stakes. M. M’Car ten, who will ride Scion in the Auckland Cup and Glentruin in the Railway Handicap on Boxing Day, will journey back to Awapuni thut night to ride Tamatete in the Palmerston North Stakes. .Malingerer has gone to New Plymouth where he will be started in the Christmas Handicap. The big gelding has been galloping attractively, though whether she will see out a fast run mile and a quarter on the fiat remains to ho seen. R. Thomp4on will have the mount on Explorer in tho Brighton Hurdle Handicap at Ellerslie. The Australian gelding has been showing something like his old dash in his recent schooling essays, and he may win a race at the meeting. Reports from Bulls indicate that Mark Time has been galloping well and it is anticipated that he will pick up a race or txxo during the holidays. Listowel and Homage are both in steady work, and they appear to be throwing off the soreness which recently troubled tliem. It hoped that tliev wil* he all right for the Wanganui Cup meeting. Empyrean is being schooled over the small sticks, and is shaping so well that he looks like making good at the jumping game. Ho may he started in the hurdle races at Martovi. Zola is looking and going very well and the mile and a half hurdle race at Awapuni on the third day should suit Attractive, who was badly injured when on the way to Feilding, is making an excellent recovery, and bo will bo put iuto work again after the holidays.
