CHRISTMAS CROWDS.
CITY STREETS BUSY. There was a large crowd of people in the city streets this morning to make last-minute Christmas purchases. About the centre of the city, in the main shopping area, the footpaths were almost as crowded as they were yesterday, and the shops were callef upon to deal with another rush of business. There was ample evidence of an exodus of holiday makers to spend the j Christmas vacation at the seaside, at ■ Akaroa, and at other holiday resorts ; The traffic to Akaroa, in particular, j seemed unusually heavy, a large num- j her of motor-cars being called into j commission to deal with the rush. The number of children in the *1 streets, though not as great as yester- j day, was considerable, and the sounds of trumpets, horns and other aids to juvenile merry making were to 1a j heard in all parts of the town.
